I just put it together and it works better than the whole circuit i built last night. I havnt tried it with a diode, just a small motor and everything works great. Im just afraid to try it on my diode untill i know if its safe or atleast better for the diode than what i currently have set up.

Ok so if I use 2 10 ohm resistors like you showed above it should work?

I just want to make sure its ok to remove the 317 as long as I input only 3.6 volts.

As soon as I can figure it out, maybe its my connection...I will post pics of my laser.

im preety sure 2 10ohms will do the job, make sure with ppl like gazoo first tho..

Ok if he sees this I guess.

Does a pot work like a volume knob on stereo? One way is all the way down and the other all the way up? The pot im using seems to be at peak in the middle. All the way down is almost off for an led and in the middle seems like full blast nice and bright and past that it goes dim and off.

its not supposed to be likethat. a pot is a variable rsisitor. all the way to one side is 0 or 1 ohm resistance, all teh way to the other side is 1Kohm resistance (in your case)

Thats what I thought so I replaced that pot already. Im worried about hooking this to my diode but I would think its safer than what ive got going now. I just have to make sure the pot is at its highest resistance and my cap is discharged before soldering it all. And I should be good.

Im not too far away form having it built. or rebuilt.

Will the dot on a DIY red be like the ones on a cheap laser pointer, I mean pretty much round and clean. My dot looks kind of like a 4 pointed star burt with this par tthat shoots off to one side getting wider as it goes out. Its wierd, maybe its the optics, i just dont want to loose power from this if its possible.

i dont know much about diodes them selves but my diode is able to light matches close range and pop balloons from around 4 feet away. I dont think it would do that if it was dead. The dot on it just isnt that pretty. its also an open can diode form a lite-on 20 dvd burner.

well i have an update, its working and my diode is not dead yet. However the beam is really dull. No where near as bright as it was when I had it hooked directly to the batteries with the 10 ohm resistor. The pot needs to be turned almost all the way up before the laser lights up.

Any ideas?

thats what I am trying to build without the 317

umm, the whole point of that circuit is the LM, if you connect the diode with no LM, u get dead diode... The LM is like 2 bucks at Radioshack, and its very easy to install... seriosly, its not that hard...

too much resistance on pot. get a smaller one, like 100 ohm.

Ill PM u with some more "stuff"

ok, thanks alot for the help so far man. I appreciate it. Now I just have to find a smaller pot that I dont have to order.

The pot I am using lights up an led nice and bright but im sure there is a big difference between the led and the diode.

ok, just a quick question. i'm tying to figure out a good amount of resistance for a circuit for a blu ray. i am planning on using three 10 ohm resistors in series connected in parallel to a 1k pot. if i'm correct, that's about a max of 30 ohms. does that sound doable?

<--10-- --10-- --10--> = about 30 ohm total?
<---------1k pot------>

Use a regulator.

The open can diodes can be VERY powerful if set up correctly. Use the 317 and a resistor equal to 3.5 ohms between the output and adjust. This will supply 350ma's to the diode and give you an output of around 240mw's. You will need to use 6 AA or AAA nimh batteries. Preferably AA. If you want a powerful laser...do it.. :)

I will not involve myself with questions that have to do with running the open cans or blu-ray diodes without a driver. ::)

you can do it man, DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE

BTW, was it hard getting diode out of burner? if not, I might want one, as 240mW is guudz...

Ok thanks............

No it wasnt hard getitng the diode out of the burner. I guess it waqs because lite-on seems to be a cheaper company, it was very easy to take apart and the diode was right there. I barely had to take it apart at all.

Anyway Ive got my laser all done and it burns and pops, its great, if it dies in a month or a week then it dies. I used DDL's circuit minus the 317 powered by 3.6 volts. I have no clue what the output power is or any of that. I know its power full enough to do what I want but it struggles burning matches.
