Need Help for build my laser pointer

Hello comunity of Laser Pointer Forums.
First of all, I would like say I'm French. And I come to you because you are the only ones who can help me. And I'm sorry in advance for any spelling mistakes.

I have a laser diode blueray of the PS3. The reference is KEM-450-DAA. The diode have 3 pins. On the diode i can read "OP0401596284" but i can not find a datasheet of this reference.
I would like to make a laser pointer with this diode. For this I have 6 battery rechargeable 4: AAA Ni-MH 700mAh 1.2V and 2: AAA Ni-MH 500 mAh 1.2V.

I want to build electrical system with pushbutton, resistor, battery and the diode.

My questions are: -What resistor i can use ?
-How I can use battery?
-And What i can add in my electrical system?

Those batteries won't cut it. You shouldn't mix the 700mAh and 500mAh, and just four Ni-mh will not have enough voltage. Even if you had six, their current draw capabilities are not the best.

You will also need a proper constant current driver, a resistor isn't enough. Search for "CC-boost" or "benboost" in the search bar at the bottom of the page.

Thank you for the information about batteries.
What kind of batteries can I use for a laser pointer if possible rechargeable? And "CC-boost" and "benboost" I don't understand very well. What this?

And the YT videos are not always understandable

The pinout is most likely the same as a PHR
or GGW. It could also have the middle pin
as negative like a LPC. The + pin will
always be the same. If it's a PHR, it is
good for about 125mA. Otherwise, only
40mA. In that case, it's not enough to
light a match or burn anything, but still
enough to do fluorescence and GITD.

Hello Haiyder,
First of all I would suggest you first make a post introducing yourself. Second I would like to say that you should do a bit more research on how lasers work before asking for help. A simple understanding of how drivers work, why they are important should suffice. Also there is a great function in the forums called the LPF search. It is much better than the normal search function. I would also suggest reading all of the stickies in each of the sections. That said, welcome to the forums. :)

Yes. If your goal is burning, then I would
shoot for 125mA. That will burn a little.
If it doesn't work and the diode fails,
then it wasn't meant to be. 6X and above
are much better for burning. If you want a
really nice single mode burner, then go for
a S06J or even better a BDR.

In any case, wear laser safety glasses
when focused burning close up.

I would take the 125ma but I'm a novice in electrical. And I don't know how make this system. :undecided:
My goal is not realy burn everything I see. I'm not crazy :)
I would like make laser pointer that burn a little.

With any laser, I pay attention. And I take any protection.

Unfortunately, you cannot make a laser that burns with a diode taken from PS3 console.

It will give off maximum of 20 mW if you are lucky, and it should be driven at very low currents (25mA if I remember correctly). You would need at least 50mW or so, of output power to make the laser burn anything.

If you are still interested in building it, here is a simple schematic for a linear driver that could help you:


And here is a schematic how to use a "test load", that is, how to make something that behaves like a laser diode, and attach it to the driver so that you can measure the current and make sure it's good before you use your real laser diode.



With this driver, you will need a power source between 7 and 12 volts. I recommend playing around with various AC adapters you might have, or buying some lithium ion batteries from dealextreme.com.

Component C1 is "capacitor". It is optional. You can build the circuit without it, if you wish.

LM317 is current regulator. It is a chip that only lets correct amount of current through.

Resistor is used to set that current.

If your desired current is 20 mA (milliamperes), that is 0.02 Amperes.

You need 1.25 / 0.02 = 62 Ohms.

Formula also works the other way around:
If you have, example, 70 ohms resistor, the current would be:
1.25 / 70 = 0.017 A, (or 17 mA).

Or 60 Ohms resistor:
1.25 / 60 = 0.0208 A, or 20.8 mA.

This only works with this specific chip, LM317, and it's variant, LM1117. You can find those chips on eBay for VERY cheap.

Remember:
Amperes = Current
Volts = Voltage
Watts = Power

Also, it will help if you learn "Ohm's law".

If you need to buy components, always use ebay. It's very cheap.
