can ya link me?

Here is the original tutorial from Kenom:

Here is an updated tutorial from Sk8er4514 showing how to build a Blu-Ray using a Flex-Drive and the Dorcy Jr host, this is where the need for the "Full-Body" heatsinks to complement the Flex-Drive was identified:
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1214285108/0#0

Lots of excellent information in spyderz thread too:
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1218324818/0#0

A Dorcy Jr build will run any of the currently available diodes from a single 3.7V battery, as long as you use a booster-driver, (such as the Flex-Drive, from Dr. Lava)
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1209418066
This driver will boost the voltage to what is required by your diode, (within design-specs), while regulating your current. They can power an open-can diode to at least 460mA using a single lithium battery!

The main diference between the two heatsinks for the Dorcy, is that one only replaces the reflector with a heatsink, while the "full-body" replces all of the original host internals, adds additional heatsinking, and makes it easier/more simple to build or modify.

great info, and great explanations!!

Thanks DH!

I've found all my parts,

$15 for PHR-803T? awesome, I always screw one up somehow, so I'll get 2.

Aixiz acrylic- 4$

host-25$ US

DH full HS- 22$
(plus a reactor pack, awesome!!)

http://hacylon.case.edu/ebay/laser_diode/Micro_FlexDrive.php
FlexDrive- 28$
Total (not including marbles) = $109US ($168.55AU)

but I've also found this interesting thread:

$23.6 totally sounds worth it for what it does.

I may be repeating what you have already read..

If you use a flexdrive be sure to kill the dorcy's boost driver inside the black plastic plug on the positive end of the battery half..otherwise you'll have unstable output because of having the two boost drivers together.. :-/

Hey guys!

I'm planning a Dorcy jr. Build and have a few Q.s

http://mysite.verizon.net/grall/darkhorsecustom/id47.html
Dark_horse heatsinks, which one do you prefer? has anybody had experience with both?

and how does this work with one 3.6V cr123A battery?

I have both of Dark_Horse's heatsinks and the full length one is definately the way to go.  Both are great heatsinks, but the full length heatsink makes the Dorcy Jr mod much easier as you dont have to figure out how to secure the heatsink in the end of the host so that it doesnt slide up and down inside the head of the host.

Ted

Edit:  I have mine running at 450mA, but it is a 22x LOC red.  The CR123A are pricey if you buy them locally (in the USA anyway)  I ordered the rechargeables from DX along with the charge

Edit 2: My PHR-803T is running at 130mA and is working great. I am very careful with duty cycles tho.

I'm using the rechargables, what kind of duty cycles are you using?

is 120mA possible with the flex drive?

Dr Lava's flex drive has a low and a high range.  91-151mA, 175-500+mA .

With my PHR-803T, I am very careful to not run it more than 1 minute with several minutes of off time between.  With my 22x...... i accidently put it in my pocket with it turned on and it was there at least 20 minutes, the entire host was very warm to the touch..... and it continues to burn like a monster

Ted

Edit: The duty cycle is for the protection of the diode, so that i dont kill it by overheating it. The Flex drive will "turn off" when your battery gets too low. Strongly suggest using only protected rechargeables.

can i use a "rechargeable cr123 3.7Volts protected" on these host with phr-803t and fex o micro-drive?
and if i can what should the driver mA be set to?
