Hello! I'm here to learn as much as I can, I've got a project in mind that may need a lot of help with (or maybe this has already been done before). I've finally have a small room that I can make my own, and I'd really like to try out this experiment.

My idea is to try to illuminate an entire room with one laser beam, along the ceiling of the room, using mirrors to reflect back and forth in a grid or in random angles. If the beam powerful enough it should spill onto the white surface of the ceiling and would glow. In my mind, it would be like an invisible light source when it's turned off, and any smoke or dust would scatter and make the beam seem even brighter.

I understand this would be very dim and would only be visible in a very dark room, and also the quality of mirrors probably matters, and for the most part, the laser must be powerful and stable enough to travel 100-200 feet, and have a plug in source.

I want to learn about laser modules that can be run for hours at a time, cooling, power supplies, mirrors, mounting, and safety etc. I believe that green would be the brightest color to do, but if violet could do the trick I'd try that too. I want to keep my budget open at the moment so I can consider all possibilities.

If you've come across a similar project, please link! I personally haven't seen this done before, but I'm excited to read read read

You can get a 50-100mW 532nm Green Laser and shine it
at a white room ceiling and it will light up the room.

That being said...

Quite superb! Can you recommend the correct subforum discussing retailers that offer the types of components that I'd need? Any similar project threads that i should check out? Is this forum primarily suited to handheld laser pointers? Thanks, You guys rock!

Check out the B/S/T sections for items that you may
be looking to purchase.
Check out the Tutorials section to see what has been
built and how to build it..

The name of the Forum kinda gives it away... but members
here build many other electronic devices as well..

I thought of doing the exact same thing as you ajengen. There are a few things you need to research, in my opinion.
1. Front surface mirrors, they are the only ones that will let you do it without loosing too much power.
2. Divergence, a laser that has to be reflected in a small surface as a mirror needs to have a great divergence otherwise you will start with a 1mm dot and end up with a mirror the size of your fist.
3. Placemet. In order to make your project happen you will soon realize that you need to have it amost like a permantent setup. If you change the the angle of the laser just a tiny bit you will end up loosing all the reflections.
4. Duty cycle and laser type. You want this to be just a show for people when they enter your room or do you want it to work for many contiuous minutes? Small lasers aren't too happy if you keep them on for more than 60 sec. Big lasers as gas lasers can be kept on for much longer but at a great electric cost.

Anyhow good luck with your project and welcome to the forums.
