I'm curious to know whether anyone has ever built a handheld laser using an array of diodes focused into one beam?

Has anyone attempted a laser build using a larger portable power source, such as a 40 volt, 5amp Ryobi battery? It seems to me that this could power a number of Nub44M's in an array to make a very powerful portable laser. Just wondering if anyone has experimented with these larger batteries?

Does anyone know if there is a shelf life for unused laser diodes? In other words, how long can you store a laser diode (assuming good storage conditions) without any degradation? Do any elements of the diode break down over time, regardless of use?
