That could always be useful.

I guess it depends on your installation though. Here in the netherlands we rarely see water mains pipes freeze or burst, but sometimes outdoor plumbing (intended for watering the garden) does. There are systems on the market that actually drain the water from the exterior part after each use.

Water mains generally doesn't freeze because it runs fairly deeply underground, and while we do get frost days (entire day below zero celcius) this rarely lasts long enough to freeze the soil very deeply. Even if it freezes for a week or two continously water mains rarely are affected, though the last time that happened is well over a decade ago.
