Okay, well, I can see now that this is the wrong forum to be posting something like this.
I was thinking of trying this on P****nl*****n, but I'm not a member there. Is there anyone
who is also on there who wants to partner up and do a GB over there?

OP:
After some digging, I was able to find a much lower price on these than what they're going
for on eBay. If you haven't read the original thread, these are 850nm pulsed IR diodes in a
plastic package with an integrated driver stage. Here is the rundown.

Osram SPL LL85 WL: 850nm OP: 10W QTY: 50 $9/piece

For some time now, I have wanted to try my hand at laser range finding. These look very
attractive as they have a PFN already built in, simplifying the design process somewhat.
I'm sure there are other applications for them as well. The datasheet also lists ignition, but
with a 0.1% duty cycle, it's probably not enough to burn through any CD cases. Still, if my
math is right (and it is often wrong), with a 100ns pulse width that works out to 10,000
pulses/sec. at full crank, and actually this is a bit generous.

It says right on the datasheet that these are an eye hazard, so anyone who decides to get
some will need to take as much care with these as with any high power laser.

I hope we can get this thing rolling.

Re: Feeler: Osram SPL LL85 10W Pulsed Laser Diodes

10W sounds good BUT

10000mW*0.001=10mW

This is for telecommunication not for burning!

You can't burn anything with it nor see the beam.

And it's an uncommon size.

Why should I buy this?

If you want 10W IR Lasers grab 200USD and buy a 808nm c-mount.

There are 25W IR diodes in similar packages that cost less than $25 but it's probably the light you will never see nor will it be put to any use for our hobbyist needs except for adding a new line in your signature.

Absolutely, I agree. If it wasn't already clear in the first post, these are definitely NOT for burning. I am
skeptical of the datasheet's claims of "ignition" as well. It is a clever word choice, really. Burning is
different from ignition. Ignition just means the initiation of combustion, whereas burning would imply to
me that the light itself is what sustains material destruction. Tiny highly absorbing particles don't
require very much energy to ignite, so I will not dispute the claim on the datasheet without exhaustive
testing. I'm sure that if it can be done, it requires special conditions and would not be easy.

Again, these diodes are primarily for range finding. That is, determining the distance to something by
bouncing light off it. A very short pulse of light is sent out and the time it takes to return is counted with
a very fast very stable clock. Even with a 30MHz clock, accuracies of 50ft are theoretically possible
with a well calibrated timing cycle. If I could get even a 100ft accuracy, I would be thrilled.
