Just tore apart a sled.

Can't say which model it is but when I removed the earth magnets there was loads of red sticky stuff on my hands after handling them.

Someone care to enlighten me

well it couldnt be anythin else....

Majority of these sleds are just soaked in red loctite, and around the magnets and coil, usually some lubricant. (you probably have a mix of both on your hands afterwards?)

Incase you haven't already, tis probably a good idea to wash your hands.

LoL yea 2 nights ago I gutted an old iMac, one of these



The gears for the sled were also covered in lubricant. I took the computer apart mostly to scrap it but also to get a few pieces that I'm going to use to make a beam dump.

I would have used a hammer to take them apart.

Yeah , I took apart a CDRW drive a few years ago, and there was a bunch of "lube" between the magnets and the focusing lens carrier. It was actually "connecting" the carrier to the magnets. In other words, it was "suspended" by capillary action, between the magnets and the coil of the lens focussing piece. (Now, I regret not taking a pic of it) I just thought it was some kind of "viscous damper" or something like that, but I've never seen anything like it ever before, or since (and I have taken apart LITERALLY thousands of electronic devices).

So maybe your drive had the same stuff, I dunno. But, like GBD suggested, I washed my hands straight away.

You never know what you're dealing with when you reverse engineer something made in China. Toxic substances seems to be their trademark.

People only buy them for what they look like..

Unless of course you want to utilize some of their editing software.. then that's cool.

I've been running apple computers sine 1994-95 (back when they weren't so pretty lol) but I do agree that it seems like these days a lot of people buy them because they're trendy.
