hey jay i have found these
http://www.megabatteries.com/item_details2.asp?id=14267&cat_id=205&uid=1395
so there is no need to drill out the mxdl to fit a 3.6v battery its the size of 2 cr123A's and same size

toked323, are you talking about using one of these batteries? To get 3.6 volts total? I have used this voltage in an MXDL for a Cree emitter, but went back to 7.2 volts for the DDL driver in the MXDL red burners. But I did take a look at that link, and it says that those batteries are the same size as a AA battery. The length of a AA battery is not compatable (size wise) with the MXDL.

I know, its a smart idea. but, where do you charge 14650's?
here!
(that's the direction I've been headed for my burner)
nice man! go for it and tell us how it comes out!
Hey are you guys talking about using a different driver for these burners? Sounds like your talking about using a single, 3.6 volt battery??

me - yes... one very large one - less waste, more wasting power

that is, if I get the circuit & parts right :p

Keep us up to date with new driver configurations! I can tell you that, (since we are in the 'heatsink' tread) if your talking about an open can diode, you won't be happy with less than 350mA's. You'll get a little over 200mW's @ 350mA's with an acrylic lens. You will like 420mA's better!

with a 14650, Ill go with an AMC7135. but, i do prefer 420mA, as it KIKS A$$!!! i cant explain how mcuh I love my laser.... I wouldnt give itaway even if someone offered a million bucks (BTW thats just figurative speaking, if you are willing to pay a million PM me and ill be sure to assist you).

Oh...ok. Hey it looks like these are the same size in diameter as the CR123's:
Edit: These are the protected ones: http://www.batteryjunction.com/protected-17670.html
I haven't tried them, but the size is 17mm X 67mm, so it should fit right in there! But, as I have said, I went away from this idea, because I found that I wanted more than 350mA's. Also, it will be more work than it's worth using the AMC driver, because of having to isolate the LD/heatsink...

very true, if only the AMC was like the DDL regarding the - polarity....

Now for the Cree mod in the MXDL, this battery,
http://www.batteryjunction.com/protected-17670.html
should be perfect using an AMC7135/1050 driver:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1885

The emitters, are already isolated from the aluminum 'star' heatsink that they are mounted on. Some models I have made using this driver, are near the bottom of this page:

that batt is 2 mm longer and 1 mm thinner... Im preety sure the 14650 would be fine, as it is ust an 18650 in lsim style. You might have problems screwing on the cap all the way with that batt. Have you tried it sucessfully?

amk, I have not tried that battery. But, I'm sure it will fit perfectly because it is the exact same legnth as an 18650 (67mm), which I have tried (in a drilled out MXDL) And, of course, we have all tried the RCR123's, which are the same diameter as the 17670 battery. (17mm)

an 18650 is 65 mm long, see my pos in you MXDL mod for super bright flashlight thread. there I explain why it wont fit.
