I was thinking, now this is a longshot here, if I hook up the same mechanics from an etch-a-sketch, (the knobs move the spot) if I could use that to more precisely aim lasers being held on a tripod. Currently, I'm disassembling an etch a sketch I picked up at a dollar store to extract the pieces. If anybody has any experience with a similar mod let me know. Also if I can find a good relatively cheap tripod I might sell these modded bad boys at a later time once I figure the best way to assemble it.

Stay crunchy.

I'm confused as to what your trying to accomplish. Are you trying to turn an etch-a-sketch into a kinda mini manual cnc machine? Turn the knobs to burn a design into some material?

Yeah I would like to know too. Just last night had this idea of taking apart an etch a sketch and using the parts inside for a mini cnc.. or at least use the parts as a template for a larger one.

the hell is a cnc?
I'm kinda new to lasers but have a vague background in simple mechanics.
What I want to do is turn a tripod into a tripod that can be moved on an X and Y axis via the use of 2 knobs, similar to how an etch a sketch moves the drawing pin on an X and Y axis. This would be used to finely move it, perhaps used in high exposure pictures to write things.

CNC's are machines (usually number controlled), such as laser cutters.

Hey alf, you don't need to keep following. A mod will see this soon enough.
