Wow - at 50ma, I can pop a sharpie'd balloon - I wasn't expecting that.

I kinda suspect it's related to the sharper focus I'm seeing with these.

Nice observation !! They do focus to a pinpoint !! I also notice that about 10% gets through a black balloon. I've never seen that before. 405 is a new world.

At 50mA, the output is around 30mW according to Mike's graph and that is sufficient to pop sharpied balloons.

So it focuses to a nice point but when collimated the beamspot is rather big and messy.

Man you guys are going to tempt me to overdrive my diode. But I won't. Not again... Deliberately! Not without a TEC, anyway. At least it explains/confirms my skin-sting and match-light incident that  seemed to greatly surprise a few...

What are you guys doing for housings? Daedal is making a nice project enclosure for some of his... Here's my idea... Of course, there's no proper driver circuit in there, but one could easily fit, given the right board. The aixiz module is held in with a little strip of doublesided tape at the top, with some padding underneath to keep it centered with the hole drilled for the beam.

Is that a removable section depending on how many batteries you want to use? I've never seen one like that.
Can you get 4.5-5V out of it with one AA?

I'm still working on the circuitry but I have a viable solution that can give me ~5V steady out of a single AA down to 0.7V and up to 100mA ;D

Although, I'm probably going to use a set of 14500's in that one

I set the current at 40mA...

WOW what a color!!

But here is what is really neat...
I focused my Aixiz..and this thing ETCHES and SMOKES BLACK PLASTIC!!!!!

At first I thought I was NUTS!!!!!...

But it was CLEARLY SMOKING BLACK PLASTIC!!!
