Limited posting for new comers

Hi All,

I don't know if this already happens or whether it's been discussed before but is there any way posting can be limited for new comers? (Did I read a blanket limit suggestion the other day? ) I think there are several advantages to this but I await further wisdom.

First, it forces members to search and read to answer their own questions should they have reached their limit for the day/week/whatever.

Secondly, it prevents misinformation being published for other new comers to go damage themselves, others or their equipment from questionable advice.

Third, it could go some way to raising the level of knowledge in line with a post count. This is important because a post count, rightly or wrongly, adds weight to whatever is said. There is at least one recent member that could be seen to be experienced and dispenses advice, (possibly even considered dangerous), but actually knows very little.

Fourth, it may just make someone think that little bit harder as to whether they waste their precious post in whatever thread their reading.

I don't know what the measure should be as to when limits are lifted but maybe; time based; rep based; request based?

I think this idea may need work but could help us all out. I don't want to see restrictions to access of information so I don't think limiting PMs should be included and this would also allow individuals to get to know a new comer and vice-versa. It seems to me that the slower, more methodical members contribute more in the end and these members shouldn't be handicapped by such a system.

I await your senior thoughts,

M
:)

Oh yea, that will boost memberships, gagging newbies....

Not the best idea.... not the worst either, just not the best.

Fair comment but is it just about membership? Shouldn't posting be earned?

It's kind of obvious who you're referring to... But besidesd that, even though it's me, I am completely for this change. I have a hard time not posting just because I like talking, etc. I have relatively little care, and I'm half debating the thought to ask Avery to NOT make me a 'vet' till 2000 or 3000 posts. Just to make it fair. I am completely for this possible rule because then I would have reason to post less. Such a simple rule, yet it hans't been implemented...huh

The vets are the ones who post info so we can all learn from
NOT the people that have 1000+ posts

(IMO) Post count is not contribution

I think it should be limited by posts per day count. Anything above 10-15 posts per day from someone who doesn't know what they are talking about is ridiculous and should be limited.

Most newcomers won't need to post more than 10 times in one day.

Bloompyle, you're not "made" a vet, you ask for the password when you reach/surpass 1000 posts, you can wait until you've gotten to 2-3,000 posts if you want to, but there's nothing stopping you. And as GoRdOn_B said, post count is not indicative of contributions to this forum.

@Morgan, it's a good idea, but it may be a little complicated. I think that Avery could look into a system for new threads, as I know on one forum I'm a member of, you have to have your thread approved by a moderator/administrator, maybe it could be setup so that any thread started by someone with less than say, 40-60 posts would have to have it approved, so as to not bother them every day with new thread requests.

Would this idea cause the acct. junkies to make even more accts or would it give us some relief from them?? They remind me of the fire ants down here in TX.--hak

Y'all know that I am "old school." My experience is mostly from mail lists. I run several of them. One of them are fully moderated and on a couple of them I moderate NooBs until I get a "feel" of who they are.

Adding some sort of moderation to NooBs is a large effort for the admin.

Limiting the amount of posting allowed for new members will cause us to lose some new members.

Capping the number of posts per day for everyone will cause some good knowledge to be passed by.

We will NEVER completely eliminate drama or someone disseminating bad info (unless we go full moderation which is not practical).

We are about to get a second mod. The drama and SPAM went down with the addition of Simon. I suggest that we wait to see how much more it will be limited with the addition of the second mod before we try to restrict the members of the forum more.

Peace,
dave

I'm willing to bet he don't last that long. Anyone wanna take me up on this? Maybe we could bet a PHR or something. And yes, I'm dead serious.

Back on topic: This idea is decent, like a three day probation before being allowed to post so this the user has time to actually read instead of spamming the same questions that have been asked countless times already.

Huh, so more people are jumping on the TJ bandwagon. Cool I guess, if plastering a teenage kid's face in your sig gets you off at night then so be it. I guess everybody gets happy from something. But, I don't deserve becomming a 'vet' at 1000 posts, so I don't want it. I'm here for fun and lasers, not to get ridiculed by some guy on the internet that thinks he's so cool because he knows more than me about lasers.

Wow, you're really, really thick, aren't you? This ISN'T 'the TJ bandwagon' as you so eloquently put it, this is the 'stop posting useless crap EVERYWHERE constantly board'. I guess it's true that most people close their minds when they open their mouths. I agree TJ has been hassling you a lot, but come on, it's THE INTERNET! You can NOT let anything on the internet make you mad, it's a completely voluntary experience, and if you don't like it, the log out button is at the bottom of the page. It's akin to staring at the sun for an hour and then whining that it made you blind, you CHOSE to do that, and it's your own d*mn fault! You've made your bed, now lie in it, or do something to fix it. I'm tired of seeing complaints about this.

Remember, it is only "fun" if/when your respond. You cannot control others. You CAN control yourself.

This isn't the TJ bandwagon, this is the stop posting crap everywhere bandwagon. Also, your history on other forums speaks for speaks for itself.
