These group buys are CLOSED and I won't be doing any more at this time.

ALL ORDERS HAVE BEEN SHIPPED!

These diodes have now been pushed to 1W!!* http://laserpointerforums.com/f40/445nm-casio-laser-diode-compilation-thread-51346-2.html#post709123

ROUND 4 is now a NEW THREAD

SAFETY WARNING: Since these are CLASS IV LASERS, goggles are REQUIRED, and GREAT CARE SHOULD BE EXERCISED AT ALL TIMES DURING OPERATION especially if you're using these in portable systems. These things will burn and blind INSTANTLY. No one here is liable for your actions if they result in injury to yourself or others.

A new source of high-powered 445nm laser diodes has been discovered. A new DLP projector from Casio contains 24 high-powered 445nm 5.6mm blue diodes. We should easily be able to do a group buy for these diodes at $50 each shipped in the US.. These are the exact same diodes that can be bought on ebay for >$400, and they are believed to be as much as 500mW. They are multimode, however, so beam specs will be a bit rough. Also, international shipping will cost a tad more, and will be handled on a case by case basis.

Please indicate interest here, if there is enough we can buy a projector and get these diodes burning.

Lots of great info on these diodes in this thread: http://laserpointerforums.com/f40/445nm-casio-laser-diode-compilation-thread-51346.html including pics and P-I-V graphs.

Lots of good info here as well: http://laserpointerforums.com/f40/445nm-sled-pics-51335.html
Very detailed beam profile: http://laserpointerforums.com/f40/445nm-sled-pics-51335-2.html#post709065

The lens that each diode is paired with in the projector will be shipped with the diode.

Projector for Round 3 has been ordered!!!!! Time to pay up folks.. The sooner the money's in, the sooner everyone gets their diodes..

Unfortunately I can only accept paypal currently but I am looking into Google Checkout. Sorry Google people.. I'll update whenever I feel ready to begin accepting payments from there.

*without instant death.. The diode has not yet gone LED after 45 minutes at 1W!!!!!!! Your mileage will vary..

Damn, a lot of interest in these diodes. No wonder though, since we have been searching for a cheap source of blue diodes. And now we finally found one :)

We've found 24 lol. And are we SURE these are 445nm? I just can't believe they would load this behemoth up with 24 445nm diodes O.O

Re: ROUND 3 - CHEAP 445nm 5.6mm group buy.

I think most people realize this at this point, but it's worth stating for noobs just in case, because some of these questions are starting to pop up:

At this point, for all intents and purposes, these diodes are still untested. We don't know how much power, we don't know how good the beam is, we don't know if the lenses required can fit into an Aixiz housing, we don't know if they'll make gold start raining down out of rain clouds. If you want guarantees, wait a week and see what happens with the first group buy. There may very well produce ugly beams. That photo shows a pretty fat beam, and not much indication of the divergence. To get a skinnier beam, your divergence is going to get worse. We won't know until some tries it, so BUYER BEWARE, you're buying at your own risk. No one is going to compensate you if it's not what you thought it would be.

This has been an LPF public service announcement, we now return to your previously scheduled programming.

^^^^^ Well said PBD.....:gj:^^^^^^

Re: ROUND 3 - CHEAP 445nm 5.6mm group buy.

^Absolutely correct PBD! These diodes are multimode, so the beams are not going to be as clean as the singlemode blu-rays we all know and love.. They do seem to produce relatively good beams with the included lens, however. Also, there has been a bit of testing since it is believed by people "in the know" that these are the same diodes that were recently on ebay being sold as 500mW for >$400 each, so any testing done on those diodes should apply here as well.. Also, the diode threshold is around 80mA, with 300-400mA being the current norm for operation.. it's highly likely that more power is possible with these diodes.

Re: ROUND 3 - CHEAP 445nm 5.6mm group buy.

Hey EF....

will someone be doing some output power tests on the new
projectors before harvesting them to get an actual baseline
for the rated 20,000 hrs lifetime..

I would just love to fit one of these diodes in an aixiz module to make a handheld blue beast, even if the beam sucks :D

Re: ROUND 3 - CHEAP 445nm 5.6mm group buy.

Round 3 already! People have been snatching these things up like crazy

No payments will be accepted for this round until 16 diodes have been claimed.

Do you think the multimode mess can be corrected with the correct optics? If, so, I'd be VERY interested. Also if so, could you point me in the direction to acquiring these optics? Thanks Pat.

I think that everyone is worrying about something that we do not yet know is a problem.

If you are looking for a perfectly round beam out to 500 feet, these may not be for you or you will need to "correct" the fast axis.

However, if a nice blue beam (even if it is a little "flat") out to 30 feet or so is good, these may not need much help.

Peace,
dave

Re: ROUND 3 - CHEAP 445nm 5.6mm group buy.

Based on what I've seen here and elsewhere, the included lens that comes with each diode seems to give a pretty good beam. Here are some links that contain lots of pics and info about these projectors and their diodes:

YouTube - Casio Beamer Phosphorrad
Casio Beamer

You can see that the beam isn't terrible, there's even a side-by-side comparison with a green DPSS in the pics in the above link.

Very true.

I must say it doesn't look bad at all in that comparison picture. Let's hope it's not just an illusion with the camera?

I'm just going to play the waiting game for now.

Re: ROUND 3 - CHEAP 445nm 5.6mm group buy.

A guy on PL said that the specs on these diodes were very similar to the 1W Nichia 9mm 445nm diode. There is a possiblity that this is the same die put in 5,6mm cans, especially in the higher power projectors (There is a 3000 lumen version releasing for sale soon)!

This is sheer awesome. Also, 445nm is more of an indigo color, right? I might even get two of these.....I hate lasers, making me spend $ I really shouldn't be spending lol.
