I think these new host are going to be something special if these do become a reliable source. I think active cooling will be the norm, whether tec or fan.

Perhaps, From what I see the issue with tec's is the added power requirements and the added heat, not sure about fans, how quiet can they get?

I have a small 12v fan that is quite efficient running off even 1 3.7v cell that's very quiet. I've seen the fans used in a triple diode handheld, and I think jayrob put one in a mag light iirc. I know I've seen the build, just as little fuzzy on the builder.

This scares me as well. But only because I'm gonna want one. The brightness of my <2watt 445 is astonishing. Then the dominator I'm getting is going to be even brighter... THEN this comes along and probably more than doubles that output... That would be an incredible sight.

It will be cool when people do multi diode builds with these... 20Watts will be easily obtainable for those guys!

Ahh, the future
(*counting days until the new 520's cheapen up*)

Unfortunately I don't think your Dominator will be much brighter than your current laser. It'll be brighter but you'll only notice comparing side-by-side.
I don't think these new ones will be much brighter either, but they'll be great for burning and for beam viewing with gratings (will look like a collection of 1W lasers if they don't burn the gratings!). Brightness seems to be much harder to increase after it gets to the point where the beam is "solid" - that's why I'm far more excited about the 520nm laser.

^^ lol really? Even running at the "required" 12v, mine is quiet. Just a little hum. The fans on my aixiz mini lab lasers are almost silent too. I guess they vary like anything else.

The 5V fan I used is driven at a little over 6V. Plus there's a bit of turbulence inside the tube to aid cooling of the parts so you get that whooshing sound. Good news though is that it's been tested to be 100% duty. It probably gets pretty warm internally as the exhaust air does get warm at long run times but it hasn't failed yet. Time will tell.

I would assume installing the fan in a housing would increase turbulence, in turn increase the noise. I would like to see a line of custom hosts designed to accept a fan for diodes like these, with a internal fan mount, and extra room for the fans independent power source. If 7w could really be achieved, I think a host like this would be great. Could open up possibilities for the c-mount diodes as well.

Got another one in the begining phases right now. Parts gathering and designing BLah blah yadda yadda.

There we go! :) I knew I've seen them pop up from time to time. Would love to give it a try, but I just started putting the word out that I want an extended heatsink for my mag light host.
Now something like that is definitely worthy of the monster 9mm

If this 9mm does get more "affordable", I'm thinking of making a labby with fan and TEC. 12V input 100% duty using external li ion battery pack :eg:

It all depends on how hard they can be driven beyond the datasheet values and if it still has a decent efficiency slope beyond 2.3A. If they are like the 9mm 445's now where we can double the datasheet current and get just as much mW/mA then we could be onto some crazy high powers, but if they crap out early then it's not much better than what we already got.
Like jander said it's all wait and see right not, too early to be planning swaps.

Cool find DJNY. Will definitely be an abundance of LD's if this takes off :D
