I'm happy to hear that you like the quality. I too have the same reasoning that you do....about the cost of killing your diode vs having a nice heatsink. Of course, this is mostly needed for those who are trying to push over 250mA's in a red burner. But it looks nice as well. Did you try the fit...into the MXDL body yet? How did you like it?
Jay
[/quote]

Yeah fits perfectly. But I knew it would after seeing all your pics. Really nice colored instruction sheet too. The nicest instruction sheet of anything I've bought recently lol. The set screw is nice, because I would probably have used thermal epoxy if not, and would never have been able to get it out. NOw I can just use thermal compound. Like I said, I already killed a diode from heat. Running a little over 300mA, left on a little too long and the little hair wires connecting to the actual chip melted off the chip. Dont' want that to happen again. Thanks again!

Jay,
How much more do you charge to make a heat sink that works for these two hosts?
The reason I ask is because I think these are the best looking hosts, and one heat sink can work with two bodies with different power requirement 350mA~500mA.

WF-502B 1x 18650 Protected Battery
Using 350mA AMC7135 driver

WF-502B 2x 18650 (fixed some Protected Batteries)
Using DDL driver for more power, WL spyder style

I have two MXDL models that I have made heatsinks for:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4171
This is the one shown at the beginning of this thread. The one that DDL first introduced. The other one is this one:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3405
This second one uses AAA size batteries. So, it works for a blu-ray if you use the 3.6 volt, 10440 batteries.
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/fo...num=1202168096

Both of these models, have a 'ring' at the front to hold the lens and reflector in place. That design is needed for installation of a heatsink. It would be very difficult to have to screw the head of the flashlight onto the body, if it didn't have this type of design. The wires would get twisted, and disconnect from the diode, or driver.

As you can imagine, a lot of time and effort would go into designing and measuring for a new host. Probably taking more than one try to get it right. Therefore, I would like to stick to these two MXDL models, since the work in designing has already been done. Sorry guys, too much time involved in the designing of new heatsinks...
Jay

Hey Jay, I got a question. When you used to make the heatsinks without the screw and you had to press the module in with a vice, how wide did you make the hole so that the aixiz modules had a tight fit?

Good news Steve. Yeah, the only reason that it wouldn't fit perfectly, is if there may be some slight differences in the MXDL batches or something. Good idea with just a little thermal compound. Thanks for the compliment on the instruction sheet! Here's a link to the .doc file if anybody wants to take a look at some install details and notes on fitting the DDL driver:

I used a 29/64 drill bit, which is a tad smaller in diameter than the AixiZ modules. Then, you have to use emery cloth wrapped around something like a phillips screwdriver to sand the I.D. while it is turning in the lathe. The set screw is the way to go! Easy install. Also, easy to replace the diode!

Jay, could you post the dimensions of your heatsinks?
it looks like there are a couple of lengths, and 2 or 3 outside diameters there that would describe them.

I may be interested in one or two, think they might fit in a body I already have.

Thanks!

Edit: Picture showing heatsink dimensions removed.

A couple of people have copied some of my stuff not for personal builds, but to sell right alongside me. So I have decided not to share measurements for my stuff anymore. It's a sad thing, but the bad people mess it up for the good people...
