Default Re: FS: 1000 Lumen XM-L T6 Maglite Modification Kit - Parts, or Complete Flashlight!

I picked up one of these modified maglites.
The model I have is the 2 D cell (2 x 5000mAh 32650 Li-Ion batteries)
3 Amp 3 mode driver
stock maglite reflector
a aluminum mop (medium orange peel) reflector
UCL lens with AR coating on both sides

These are the only lights, I have to compare against the XM-L T6:

3 D cell maglite with a 3 watt drop in led, using fresh off the shelf energizer batteries
3 D cell maglite with a P7 900LM, without a driver, using fresh off the shelf energizer batteries
TrustFire P7-F16 900LM, using a fully charged AW 18650

Overall build quality is standard Jayrob craftsmanship (well built).
The host itself is standard maglite, and the internals reassembled by Jayrob.
The 3 mode driver is a nice feature although I personally leave it on high.
The estimated output is 1000 lumens.

Theres only one out of the three fore mentioned lights that came close to XM-L T6.
This would be the 3 D cell mag with a P7 running directly off the batteries. The estimated output for this P7 is 900 lumens. The performance of this P7 was great, nice color, good throw, well heat sinked. Keep in mind I didnt really have anything to compare it to.

Then comes along the XM-L T6
In order to be somewhat fare to the P7, I had to switch the XM-L to a medium mode. Thats the only way this P7 light came close. The throw from the XM-L on high mode, using a stock, smooth maglite reflector exceeded my expectations. My reaction was summed up in one wordwow, followed up with a grin from one ear to the other. The beam is exactly what is pictured in this tutorial. I must mention, using the stock smooth reflector, and pointing it at white wall within a 5ft distance youll see a slight yellow tint around the actual hot spot. This was also the same for the 3 D cell maglite with a P7. Pointing either light at anything else other than the white wall within that short distance, you wouldnt even notice this minor artifact. Not sure if this is a reflector issue or a characteristic of high output leds. This was immediately resolved when I switched out the reflector to an aluminum mop (medium orange peel) reflector. The XM-Ls hot spot had now become more of a flood. You give up some distance on the throw but whatever you point the light at regardless if its a foot away or 75ft away, its a bright white with little spill.
Without any actual test equipment/meters, lumens were estimated by each builder, and my personal observations are just that, observations.

Pros:
Very bright light with outstanding throw, forward clickie 3 mode setting with memory, long run times.
If your looking for illumination this is a excellent light for any use.

Cons:
Not your everyday carry type light (pocket carry), the slight yellow tint when used up close on white, batteries are not immediately available at your corner store if they were to be run down.

This is one of those items you didnt know how useful it is, till you have one.

Glad you like it!

I think you will find it hard to beat for brightness vs size vs run time...

Thanks for posting back!

P.S. I just took this video a couple of nights ago...

With the stock reflector, I would call it mostly a 'thrower'. At 75' distance, the spot is about 8' wide. But it's kind of a 'happy medium'. It has pretty good spill as well!

Excellent build Jay

I'm thinking of putting one together and was wondering what the procedure for placing an order is. Also which of the Ultrafire chargers would you recommend/prefer and if it is the WF-139, where might the magnetic leads be found and also I'd like a lead on a fiber optic plug for the battery monitor mod.

Just send me a private message for ordering...

About the charger, I like the WF-188, but I have had a couple that I had to send back because they did not work correctly.

I have one that works well though.

I can set up a WF-139 with magnetic leads if you want one like that.

The fiber optic cord that I have, I got a long time ago. I don't remember where. So just do a search for some. I'm sure it's easy to find...

You can search for Spectrum voltage monitor and find some distributors to choose from, but if you want to get one directly from the manufacture, go here:

Aloha Jayrob!

Solderblob sent me - he is out of what I want, which is a minimum of 1.5w output from a blu-ray is an almost indestructible housing. Of course the smaller the better, but I need it to run for half an hour.

Let me know what you recommend. I also have about ten 1000my IR laser diodes I'd like to build into hurricane-proof fire starters - or I might trade them if someone needed them.

a hui hou

My Maglite kit is my best one for long run times at that kind of power, but nobody really knows how much these 445 diodes can take...

Anyway, this thread is for my flashlight modification. Take a look over at this thread for the laser mod:
FS: Large Maglite Monster Kits! FlexModP3, Side Button Forward Clicky!

I can do the complete build except for the diode. The diodes are available in the BST section.

Send me a private message for ordering the kit!

Default Re: FS: 1000 Lumen XM-L T6 Maglite Mod With Voltage Monitor - Parts, or Complete Ligh

Hey guys,
I just purchased and received this 1000 Lumen XM-L T6 Maglite 5D w/ voltage monitor.
Heres a quick review, I'm kind of a noob so forgive me if my review is all over the place. This info will also be in the review section of LPF.

1. OK, paid and received the item in 2 weeks, was rather surprised at the quick turnaround and the updates Jay provided was very professional.
2. Packaging was very well done, big box, lots of "protection" against the delivery guy throwing the box all around his truck and stuff.
3. I got the 5D cell model, with voltage monitor, using 5 Tenergy rechargeable Nimh 10,000mAh batts.
4. There is no overheating AT ALL, when used on HIGH, on and off for about 1 hour, I'm assuming the massive heat sink is doing it's job.
5. The throw is awesome, I'm a high-rise elevator inspector and I can literally blind a man who is 70 stories above me at the top of the elevator shaft (that's my intended purpose... not to blind him but to see the bottom of the elevator cab from that kind of distance).
6. My idiot co-worker asked me to shine the beam at his eyes from 5 ft away at full power with his eyes open, for less than one second... the result was blindness by way of blue spots for 3-5 minutes, he basically couldn't see a thing and if he was an attacker... well, he's done, fight is over. Very cool.
7. The build is very strong and heavy duty, as a true maglite is supposed to be, clean looking and professional. Standard issue for a Jayrob build, I expected nothing less.
8. The battery monitor is sublime, definitely a must for high output rechargeable batts, great idea and super handy.
9. The 3 modes are perfect, too many modes are annoying and sometimes you just don't need the skullcrushing power of the full 1000 lumens!
10. That's it for now, will add to this if I forgot something. I am very happy with this product: beauty, strength, power... what else can you ask for? Get one, you won't regret it!
