Please vote in the poll above.

Recently there has been a lot of copy and pasted message around the forum, specifically in the welcome section in an effort increase post count or get more traffic to links in the posters signature.

Do you think LPF should allow these copy & pasted (canned) messages?
Please vote in the poll above & discuss.

Also, this:

The "you can contact us anytime" stuff belongs in a signature, not copy and pasted into the end of every post. The forum database should be purged of that line. I have no idea why it is copy and pasted into every post anyways when its so much easier and cleaner to add it to a signature where it belongs.

ARG, I could use an example of what you mean. But, in general, I vote to keep the forum as uncluttered as possible. I even have threads that are now irrelevant, and I'd love to be able to delete those and save some space of the servers for others.

Thanks for listening.

All this because I welcome new members with the info
they need to get started with when you yourself were
not even interested in doing so...

And this coming from a member who wants to compete
with our LaserBee products and claims that his old
LaserBee II is off by 12%...

I wonder if there is a hidden agenda....

BTW... since everyone already knows my name perhaps
you should open another Poll to stop me signing my posts...

This thread is not about one person Jerry. There have been several members doing this, both recently and not recently, but I wont name anyone.

If you want to discuss LPM's lets keep that in the laser measurement section (which by the way you haven't replied to the comments/questions direct at you there) There is already 2 threads about my inaccuracy claims, (which I believe to be accurate) lets keep this thread on topic and free of LPM discussion, there's an entire sub forum made for LPM discussion. I would appreciate it if that would would like to discuss LPM's you post in the correct section.

I have no agenda other than the desire to de-clutter LPF and prevent people from spamming to increase their post count or advertise links in their signature, nothing more.

People looking for an LPM will come across the Laserbee way more frequently than anything else. I had to do some digging when I was shopping around for others. There is no need to blast every new person with flashy banners to promote your product. That is what your doing right? I feel I can assume that since you're always making assumptions about everyone else. The reason I don't own a Laserbee is that very attitude you display in nearly all your posts towards non Laserbee products.

Yes, there useful information in there... just as there is in the stickies also in the welcome section, and other forum sub sections.

Since most of the copy/paste posts are identical, I don't feel they should be permitted.

I'm not opposed to a partially canned message, but when there is nothing unique to differentiate one from the next, and there is a product advertisement in EVERY SINGLE ONE, that is basically spam.

Edit: Updated link in spam portion to something more appropriate.

Doesn't look too hidden to me Jerry.

Equitas: exactly HOW would you change the delivered message in a 'canned' post?

I would make it at least slightly unique to each new member, if possible.

For example someone mentions that they are also into flashlights, tell them about a flashlight forum, and direct them to that section of our forum.

Someone is a machinist, tell them about the great machinists we have in the community, maybe link them to an example of ehgemus, or sinner, or mcrmouse's work.

Someone asks what's the most powerful, show them ARG's 4.9W dual diode build.

Someone is from texas, chicago, new york, belgium, uk, or other place, tell them that there are other members in the area.

What I wouldn't do is paste the same exact message.

Basically take more than three seconds to hit ctrl+c, ctrl+v, and submit.

After that, a canned part, with say links to a few critical stickies, is fine imo.

Agreed IE. Partially canned messages that are personalized and tailored to each member are fine, but telling a vendor why not to buy from a certain company is just silly.

It's not really a post count issue imo... if you want ask c0ld to take 1000 from me and to give to you :p

I just don't like seeing the same exact message over and over.

@ARGLaser - actually where WL is concerned, I don't mind seeing that message - having it seen by new members, but it is already a sticky. :undecided:

It's not only about post count, there are some members who also post to increase tradffic or awareness to links in their signatures.

While we are at it, maybe we can encourage some of the members with exceedingly LONG signatures with multiple links, font colors, sizes, etc. I get people trying to convey a message, but how about the most pertinent, recent, urgent info, etc only....It's getting tacky and makes for a less enjoyable interface.

Well tbh this should be taken into question, There will be injustice to all those who were banned for this very reason.

So, as the great legend Mr. Al Pacino says , "..And Justice for all"

I find myself blocking banners, pictures, and annoying avatars all the time, using adblock.

There is a character limit for signatures, but it doesn't seem to apply to older signatures, or to picture sizes, and certainly not to font sizes.

Edit: The ones banned so far, were usually truly spammers. LB does pay for advertising in signature, and the banner ads.
