Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

I like Krogith's idea it reminds me of really cool looking flywheels, they always have nice looking lines like his idea. I gonna have to render up in that program and see how it turns out compared to inventor.

Wait, I went into the settings and changed the cutter diameter to the smallest option and it didn't give me any errors on my hazardous symbol design.

I don't know anything at all about this emachine shop thing, but for the sizes you are dealing with here you should look into EDM machining.

That being said, it would probably be cheaper to use stainless instead of aluminum if you went with wire EDM.

Just because it's cool :D

well, I'm moving coast to coast in about ten days. So I'm happy to do this in maybe three weeks, and then there would be the 24 day creation time. I'm also 100% cool with someone else running the GB earlier, and I'll just send you the files. I'm cool with that too. Would get things moving sooner. Either way is cool with me :)

its fine if you do it, dont wanna steal your thunder sorta speak... in the time you are moving we can get people to commit to the GB...it does take at least 2 weeks just to get interested people AND get them to pay. so yea it should be fine. Just start it up and i will help you to organize it if you need.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

Sounds good.

So the cost as quoted by the software was basically about $600 after shipping and everything, to get a batch of 200 to my door.

That WASN'T with knurling, which isn't actually supported by the software, and is instead a "comment" you have to include for the machinist. That said, adding buffing almost doubled the cost to $1000 +, so I wouldn't be surprised if knurling carries a similarly high costs. I would be inclined to leave it off - to basically order through the software properly, without any additional fancy stuff that you need to request through comments. Simplicity.

We'd basically need to figure out the cost of shipping these things out to people. If we're doing a run of 200, then I'm ok shipping 20 packages, which suggests that everyone needs to order in increments of 10x. Presuming about $3 each, that's $30 plus the cost of shipping to each person. It's hard to figure that stuff out ahead of time, but it seems to cost me at least $10 to ship anything from Canada.

So I think $40 for 10x focus knobs would basically cover it.

But as mentioned, someone else would need to do the organization right now :)

alright thats not too bad. Umm well whenever you feel like you are ready, just do this GB and PM with what you need to me to do or figure out. I could start out with making a thread and also gathering interest.

Hey RHD, a very close friend of mine is going to be setting up his own machine shop with full CNC capabilities. I will keep you posted on that. I can take over this GB if it happens. Their lead time will be dramatically shorter, like 1 week. Do you want me to start it up when this happens?

Hey Stevie,
100% - that would be phenomenal. My life is literally going to be insane fairly soon, and there's no way I could responsibly run a GB. Let me know what I can do to facilitate this :)
And thanks a million - I'd hate to have let this idea dangle and then loose momentum!

alrighty...i will do this in your name since you spearheaded this. I was sooo stoked to find out my friend was openning up a machine shop. This will allow me to help the forum so much and give people here options on sources of machined laser parts.

Okay, my final design. This one took hours. I tried to make it look like the hazardous material symbol. Hope you like.

This is Awesome, When you talk to them see how possible this is? I bet with small bits you could get a pretty close design....

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

yea, thats the plan. I am planning to start offering my own host kits, as well as have them make 10 or so samples of RHD's final focus knob design. If people here like it, then I will make a group buy. Judging from what my friend is telling me, its only worth while if he can do a production run of 300 or more, so i might have to have people buy in 10X increments. The price will be about 4 dollars each give or take 50 cents or so. If interest goes well on these things once it gets started I might just make it a normal item in my list of things to sell. Also, I think i can start producing the "mini guidesman" kits regularly at a lower price since I am told the CNC machine can pop out hundreds of those in a day since they are soo easy.

Stevie - very cool.

Package of 10x plus shipping was basically what I had envisioned.

Keep in mind however, that the final shipped "to my door" price through emachineshop was down around $2.80 each with my final version. It might have crept towards the $4 mark if we had applied buffing to the surface.

So it might not actually be economical to go with your friend's shop if it will be more than $2.80 each without buffing (or more than the $4 with)
