This is fun. I wonder if it is because the diode has a very good beam profile and focuses down to a tiny dot..or is it the color. Larry, if you look at the graph Mike posted, you can get a very close estimate to what your mw's are.

I'm thinking it's a function of power density. With a smaller wavelength, it can be focused into a tighter target. That increases the amount of power received over the space (in comparison to a laser of higher wavelength but equal output), and in turn, increases the thermal load taken on by the target material. It also means that it produces a tighter, cleaner cut than a 10200nm IR laser used for industrial cutting. Too bad it can't cut things nearly as fast... yet. ;D

Hey Gazoo..that chart shows @18mW at 40 Ma...

Can that level of power smoke black plastic..or pop a balloon INSTANTLY??

If so.....well..then I'm impressed!!!!

focus or not..I didn't think 20Mw of power could do much "Work" at all!

OOOO...I so want a Bluray Burner diode to play with!!!!

THis is really COOL stuff!!~!

I have a ton more experimenting to do with this gem. But yeah, a blu-ray burner diode will be awesome..maybe next year there will be a GB for them..lol

THAT LOOKED AMAZING!! It's the same case I put my first BluRay into! ;D That's SO COOL!

I think you got the freak diode that I was saving for myself... ::) ;D J/K ... but honestly, I really think you have a freak diode if at such tiny input it gets that much power out.

Nice one Larry :D Great work and very happy you're enjoying it;

Regardless of how much I try to get the BR burner sleds... I just CAN'T find them anywhere! :( I looked all over... And OEM diodes are simply too freaking expensive!

Oh well... I guess a year is a very safe bet on the BR burners for a GB... I think you'd be able to grab a slow one from somewhere for about as much as a high-end DVD burner in a year's time ;)

What a PITA    I finally got my BR into that damn Dorcy Jr.
Not much room in there.  I finally mounted the voltage regulator on the boost board.   Had to cut the warning label to fit.

Here it is -- This is diode #3 (a little less than 1 & 2  :( )  20 mW cold creaping to 21 mW after 10 seconds.  I couldn't get enough cigar smoke in there for a beam shot.  Maybe later.

Yes - It will POP one if focused.....

Mike,
Nice job on it...I am being very careful. I am still on my first diode... :p

I built this portable with the 3rd diode because I didn't wan to machine diode housing #2 with the diode installed !!  Diode 2 will become a bi-color labbie !

DrLava --  My Scientech 362 ( old analog) agrees with my 1400 meter.  The LPM-1 is about 4% low.  Not bad for hobby stuff.  Someday, I'll find a 365  ;D

Mike

Here's my first beam shot with fog.

Mike,
I love the color of these...that beam shot is sweet. I am working on my labby circuit right now which will be used to power my next harvested diode...and it will too be bi-colored. The diode I am using is mounted in a 9mm aixiz module..it will end up being my portable if all goes well. Not sure yet if it will be bi-colored or not, but it is tempting. Glad you still have 2 working blu's.. :)

I have the blu side of my circuit finished. I swapped a resistor I was using with a precision trim pot. Does anyone know how many ma's it took to light a match? I went to 50 and stopped there. It smoked but did not light.. :p

At 20 mW, focus is critical for match lighting.  Also, I notice that about 10% of my blu goes through a black balloon.  This light needs to be experimented with.
On a match, I'd focus low on the phosphorus portion to get both paper and pyro heating.

I charged my Li 123 cell and now read 23 mW !!!

I see....I was trying to light a sharpied safety match..I will try a paper match and report back.

I can't light a match no matter what I do...it must be an art.. ;D
