Default Rayfoss 200mW Focusable Laser Torch - Extensive Review

Heya guys, the review is for this product: http://www.rayfoss.com/pro_info.asp?id=1544

Here I go.

As you know I've been around here for some months and after owning some of the dealextreme green laser pointers, the dilda, and a phr, I had tested all the colors available for a poor man, so I decided to do my final buy.

Honestly, the red color is kinda boring, this color is available for 2$ in dealextreme, and the beam is nothing compared to any green laser. The burning power is good, but the phr was doing the same, so I finally sold the dilda.

The phr amazed me more for the fluorescence than for anything else, the burning power is OK and the beam is really poor, as well as the range, a 5mW red pointer reach further. the color is cool, but I got bored of it at the end, si I sold it recently to a member of the forum.

The dealextreme pens are great if you have never seen a green beam, but at the end they can't burn, they eat the batteries as hell and the button always gets bitchy.

At this point, I wanted something with a long range, an amazing beam and an amazing burning power, and a high powered green seemed to be the only option. And here I started to look for a 200mW~ green laser. Dealextreme and focalprice got discarted since the first moment, and optotronics and similars had really high prices, not to mention the 1000$ WL were asking...

So , rayfoss and O-like caught my attention, specially the unit that I finally purchased. I liked it since the first moment and when I had almost decided its buy, some reviews from other members stoped me. They reported bad divergence, and that the laser had started mode hoping at the second day. This really scared me, and I mailed Faona about it. This was the reply:

Quote:
the 200mw laser with a normal divergence is also can burn match easily.
Just the burn point of the beam is far from the aperture (80-100mm away aperure)not like the short foucs laser near to the aperture(15-30mm away from aperture).
and...

Quote:
For </=200mW green laser the power performance is not stable is truth. Unless the user operate it according to it's duty circle i.e after each 60 seconds constatly lighting to cool down the laser for 5-10 seconds then re-light. Do this can keep a long lifespan and stable performance of the laser. This is also why a lot of seller dont sell 200mw version as most of user will not obey the laser's duty circle in use.
And well, as the offer was really really atractive, I couldn't resist and bought it. I didn't have to pay shipping because I ordered it together with a 150mW waterproof green laser for a friend (which btw, is great, but I won't review it since I haven't used it for that long).

Two days later I got the shipment confirmation and a week later the package arrived.

The first surprise was that it was way smaller than I thought, also, it had a safety lock with key instead the safety pin advertised and it didn't had a led like shown on the photos, but after this minor surprise, I looked at the instructions (crappy english btw) and after looking at how the battery should be inserted I opened the shutter, turned the key and pressed the button and WOAH lol this thing is damn powerfull. My eyes really suffered when looked at the dot on a white wall, so I went to pick the protective googles from focalprice and some matches and omg, again i was astonished, it ignited them faster than the dildas or the phr, when well focused the matches get lighted just at-the-touch.

The laser feels solid and heavy, the battery lasts for so long, and I have the impression it has a proper driver since the power doesn't seem to get down as the battery drops. Also, the focusing ring is really nice and solid. I also told Faona that I wanted a unit with good divergence, and lol, this one rocks, around 1 mrad~

At ten meters, the beam diameter is not a perfect circle and I don't know if I should measure it all or just the brighest part, but measuring the brighest part at the shortest distance gives you a 9mm dot, if you get the big one of the full dot it's 13mm, in every casy it's a 1mrad~, which is really really good.

The dimensions are this ones.

Full lenght: 15,8 cm
Head diameter: 2,9 cm
Body diameter: 2,2 cm

According to faona, who tested the power with and without IR filter, this laser perfoms like this:

Quote:
The following is the test result:
Item RF532-200mW-FLX
Without IR power output is 210mw stable
After IR filter the power output is 160mW stable
I've waited for almost 2 weeks of daily use to make sure it didn't mode hope or something, but until now it has performed perfectly, and I'm really pleased with it. Dealing with rayfoss.com was always easy, and Faona is a really kind girl. She even sent me an adaptor for free so I could charge it on the european plug. All in all, I would recomend this laser to every laser entusiast that is willing to get his first serious laser.

Some photos here:

http://img12.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=134056.jpg

(the beam photos are one of the beam of this laser, one of the beam of a DX true 50 and another of the two beams together)

And a crappy video review here:

For the ones interested in the tripod: Dealextreme tripod and clamp, 100% usefull for laser holding.

Thanks for reading and watching.

Yours,
Albert

Good review Albert...

but I thought this would be an Extensive Review of the 200mW
Green from Rayfoss...

Did you test it on a Laser Power Meter to verify what Rayfoss told
you...???
Was there a Laser Power Chart supplied with the Laser...???

I have a tendency to believe what I can see... touch... and test...
(Not saying that Rayfoss is dishonest)... but the Laser could have
had the crystals misaligned in transit... China is a long ways away...

The question arises by what you stated about your Review Laser did
not have a Power ON indicator LED... as the Rayfoss link photos clearly
show...

What was the beam diameter at the aperture...???
At what distance did you check the divergence...???
Did you verify that at 10 Meters the dot was 18mm as Rayfoss
states...???

What were the dimensions of the Laser (Diameter X length)...???
How much does it weigh...???

I might get one... but I think I would get it from O-Like...
I might be biased... Susie did buy a Deluxe LaserBee I from us
and could easily supply a Power Chart/Graph....

Watch the video to see the dimensions, anyway I'm adding them soon. Also, I don't got a meter, sorry

Also, chek that the led appears on a photo, but not in the others.

Dimensions and dot size measurements atached.

Hell yeah, Spanglish FTW.

Adding to RT. I do agree with Jerry, though; you could use some images since it doesn't look the same as the one on rayfoss.

You're a lifesaver!
I'm also contemplating investing in that laser as well!

Your review helped heaps! Thanks!

P.S: Isn't that DX clamp just so convenient and awesome? Such a brilliant buy! Cheap as well!

Hey Albert...
I just watched your Video...
I was a little disturbed by what I saw...

It seems to me that you were not wearing safety goggles when making
the video...
You seem to see very small details like the on/off colored dots of the
keyswitch that I could not even see in the video (at about 2:23 min)

@ 2:37 min.... you turned the Laser ON and could not see the beam...
so you pointed the laser at your face.... to look into the aperture...
That's not even a good thing to do WITH safety goggles...

@ 4:01 min... I See you shine the laser on a light colored ceramic tile
directly in front of you....

tell me I'm wrong....and that you were wearing safety goggles...

oh lol, ofc I was wearing the googles, that's why I confused the red dot with the green dot and thought the laser was ON when it was OFF xD

Also, I didn't show my face because it looks kinda freak with those freak googles lol, also I didin't point the laser at my face, I was looking if the shutter was opened or not! and what's wrong in shining the laser at the floor with googles?

Yours,
Albert

O-like isn't selling this one anymore exactly for what faona told me, people don't respect the duty cycle and then they complain about the laser mode hoping etc, so to avoid problems they just don't sell it.

Hey Albert...
if you were wearing goggles... nothing is wrong with shinning a 200mW
532nm Laser at a light colored ceramic floor...

BTW...The added info helps your review...

As to goggles... the ones I use for Grn.. I made myself (after testing them)..
They are good for Green and IR....

If you want so see ugly goggles... these are what I use for 532nm....

Don't worry man, first videos are like that... just look at the video I made of the Evo Pro... I had to shoot it 5 times to get it right (I messed up and started swearing, both in English AND Spanish ). Practice makes perfect

good review?... one question... can you have 0.5mrad? i think yes.. because if tou can FACUS the laser for example at about 10.. 20 centimeters... you CAN surely ( while you focus the point at 50cm.. 1 meter... ecc) find a moment in which the beam is with an EXTREME LOW divergence.. with my dilda i can do for sure 0,5 mrad if not better.

yes.. you should do LITTLE movement on the focus ring.. but if you are precise.. you can fnd the right point in wich the divergence is 5.0 or lower.. this point TECHNICALLY EXIST is difficult to fing but when for example you go FROM a focus poiunt ( to burn matches at 15cm)...TO a large beam diameter such as 30cm of diameter at 10 meter.... you're definitely past in that "near 0 mrad" moment

however.. i love that you received a good unit... i only have two about 30mw green laser.. i quld a best powered certified laser.... and i would buy a 150+ optotronics pen or THIS rayfoss laser... the only one that has
1 a good looking... style like RPLs
2 good battery source 186500..with long duration
3 true 160mw green.. but WTF... plus 50mw IR??so much?total 210mw.
3 NON intrusive secure key..(you can leave it in ON position and put out the key) perfect to leave the leaser on a desk.
4 reasonable price 150$.

3- 50mw bottle shape from FOCAL...1.2 mrad, not estimated power 40/50mw in winter. 20/30 in summer ;(. nice design.
4- 80mw bluray PEN from olike, NEGATIVE divergence focus point at about 2meter (good) and divergence of LESS THAN 0.5mrad for sure.beam is better than the 200mw dilda.

The fact is that not like the dilda, the focusing ring stops before you can find this point. Also, I think this is done so you have the "focused to the infinity" point at the end of the screw.

I also think that If I could somehow turn it more I would get just a bigger spot. Remember greenies use a more complex system than just focusing the light coming from the diode like the dilda

Also, the 50mW of IR help a lot when burning and trust me that the beam is great like it is alredy

i trust you should be good to have a LPM and see monts my monts IF the power decrease with time.... if it is a durable diode.. it should now less much power within 6 months or 1 year

Its too bad if the focus only goes infinity or wider - having something that would focus a green to a pinprick at 10 cm or so is nice. There is no reason this is technically diffcult, the typical beam-expander setup in a green laser would do just that if the lenses were further apart than configured for inifinity/optimum.

As far as power output goes: its not very likely to decline with using it for several months. The main problem with greens is thermal, but it will be back to normal once things cool back down.

Nice review Albert! Good to know you were wearing laser safety glasses. Yeah, I think your being safe, but never be tempted to get the lasers forward angle closer than 90 degrees from your face. Who knows, batteries/switch could spontaneously power up the diode as a malfunction. I enjoyed the review, thanks again.
