I dont get how to solder the diode to the driver?

I am following this video to make the laser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVugSGldXZ8

It's very unclear what to do when soldering the diode to the driver. It says drop a blob of solder between the pins and then pull the circuit board at the same time!? What is the purpose of doing that at the same time, and why would I drop a blob of solder that touches all the pins? Then it says solder the driver onto the diode pins +LD -DG...I don't get it. Shouldn't I solder +LD onto the + pin and the -GD onto the - pin separately? Why is there only 1 blob of the solder between the two and then all I see is the guy sliding the driver in as if the solder hasn't already frozen?

Sorry I'm a bit frustrated, I apologize for all these questions. A little clarification is greatly appreciated.

Edit: Am I not supposed to put separate blobs of solder like the following?:

Re: I dont get how to solder the diode to the driv

that blob method is for taking the little circuit off the diode pins. not soldering to the driver.

houldn't I solder +LD onto the + pin and the -GD onto the - pin separately

YES

tats exactly what you do

he never shows the method of soldering to the board in the video.

just do as you said and you will be fine!

Whew. Okay, is it required for me to remove that little board? As well as the not used pin?

Re: I dont get how to solder the diode to the driv

make sure to not connect the LD+ and LD- (GND) on the driver. if you do accidentally connect thing, using a desoldering braid works well to get the solder off, or sometimes i use a sharp pointy tool and scrape the solder off from between the connections.

good luck

Re: I dont get how to solder the diode to the driv

Guys I messed everything up :'(

I didn't have a vice so I had to use a hammer to push the diode into the module front. Then, I had major trouble removing the circuit on the diode, I didn't understand how to do it and in the end the diode pins ended up being bent. The circuit was ripped to little shreds and I had to pry them off one by one before I could fully remove the circuit. Next, I had some really fat lead-free solder and a dead soldering iron. I had to use the sides of the tip to get any solder to melt. I ended up putting reaaally fat blobs onto the +LD and the -GND, which I noticed immediately turned orange and rusted once they froze. They froze so fast I took over an hour to get the diode pins to touch the solder connections. When I tested it, it lighted up! I was so excited so I put the back of the AixiZ module on and when I screwed it back I heard a grinding sound, when I unscrewed it, the diode pins ripped off the driver and were twisted! Attempting to untwist it, the solder on each pin mixed within each other, so another half an hour to remove the solder between the + and - pins and to pry the pins apart. The - pin broke off completely! I placed solder onto where the - pin was and then attempted to reconnect everything, it worked again! But as soon as I put the module back on and I heard another grinding sound, it didn't work anymore so I gave up.

:( there goes my rckstar driver, blu-ray diode, AixiZ module (maybe I can keep this if I pop out the diode), and 3 hours of work :(

I learned my lesson the hard way, I should've been patient until I had the proper tools...I am ordering a new soldering iron right now.

Get some proper electronics solder, the orange colour suggests to me a high flux content as used by plumbers of old.

What has happened is that the Rkcstr drive has hit the end of the Aixiz module and been twisted round, to avoid this next time drill out the hole at the back of the module to just under the inside diameter (see photo)....Even when you do this you need to be watching, as you screw the module together, to make sure that the driver doesn't catch and twist the pins..... these things need care and attention to ensure success.

Re: I dont get how to solder the diode to the driv

the best type of soldering iron i find to use on these smt and diodes are the battery operated ones, the ones i have a fine tipped and very good, plus the soldering iron doesnt over heat too much.

i've solder diodes to circuite boards with the same diode many times and still works perfectly. not to mention the Rkcstr driver how it uses the smt components. i solder it on, than remove it sooo many times, but always works in the end ;)

Watch it, even if you know how to solder.
That is a very good vid Hydro, I have never looked at it before as soldering is something I can do :)

I have seen some awful attempts at sticking wire to PCBs on LPF in the past. All too often I see multi strand wire that was obviously not twisted and tinned before soldering in place leaving strands hanging out making a short circuit more likely. There is a vid on here somewhere that I posted on that very subject...

Good vid...should be part of a sticky....if it isn't already ::)

I have very little experience, maybe one or two projects. Close to 0 experience in soldering. I've watched that [famous] video so many times before I actually soldered for the first time, and its just the best video on soldering ever. Unfortunately, wrong tools will never help you become good at soldering. Plus, that video doesn't describe techniques on how to solder reaaaally micro things, even though the same techniques still apply. First time with a rkcstar driver, it was so tiny and I had FAT plumbing solder, terrible combination.

I ordered a Wellers general soldering kit that comes with smaller tips and chisel ones as well. That will definitely help. However, I still have some questions. I've got the diode inside the AixiZ, and its now held on the clamp. What can I use to help hold the driver in place while I use my right hand to hold the iron and my left to feed the solder? Not sure how to do it properly.

I noticed you had a switch on that laser? I have tons and tons of switches of all kinds here and no clue how to wire them to the power supply. Any help on that?

Re: I dont get how to solder the diode to the driv

The switch ends up in a plastic block at the end of the Aixiz module and connects between the pos battery contact and the white wire on the Rkcstr drive.... like this....

What you cannot see is the hole in the back of the block, behind the switch to get the soldering iron in to connect it up... (neatly back on topic I think ::) )

Sweet, all this information help me realize more about soldering drivers to diodes or vise- versa whatever. And I hope I can get it right without learning the hard way. right now I'm thinking of getting the PHR 803T sled and get that 405nm diode and try to solder it correctly to O-like 405nm driver if it fits, does anybody know if the PHR diode will fit in the O-like 405nm driver? I've always been wondering?

Ditto........this thread is over a year old. There is a current "solder" thread going on right now.
