And took the sleds home. Now I have a bunch of 3 prong diodes sitting here on my desk.

A couple came from some light scribe HP burners, others came from toshiba labelflash burners. Anyone have any pictures of these sleds and which diodes are the proper ones to use?

*edit* I am currently uploading pictures of these sleds if people would be so kind as to help me identify them.

The two HP sleds (I think)

I dont recognize them immideately, but there is always trial and error to find out - connect them to a 100 mA or so current source, and see which one is the red.

Boosted;

Just hook them up to a power supply @ 2.5 VDC.

The Red lasers will be lasing at that voltage.

They are probably 16X Red diodes.

The IR lasers will barely be visable.

Should i remove the diodes from their housings? Would that make it easier to discern what they are?

Hey there Boosted,

I might not be able to help identify those critters but you will get some great practice with them.

Check out the first link in my sig for a basic intro to building and the second for more depth.

Are you also able to resize your pics? The maximum size the site asks for is 800 x 600 and that fits nicely on the page without having to scroll to read the text or zoom out.

Welcome, , and you're sure to have some fun!

Make sure you test them on a CURRENT LIMITED power supply heh. Limit it, as said, to 100mA.

There's a fry's down here in Arlington. I just don't trust anything they sell that has active power going through it.

MASTECH HY1803D LINEAR DC POWER SUPPLY 0-18 V @ 0-3 A - eBay (item 350376442174 end time Sep-24-10 15:15:48 PDT)

There are others, but that's basically what you need. Any power supply that will do up to 7v DC and has adjustable current limiting will work for any diode your likely to ever mess with.

I use a BK 1670 myself. Picked it up at a hamfest for $35 but I had to do some bodywork on it's housing since it'd been dropped at one time, and recalibrate both meters, but since then it's worked perfectly.

When I sort through random sleds or even LD's, the quickest way I have found
without hooking them up, is the colour of AR coating either on the LD itself, or
in its immediate path through the optical assembly.

Yea there is one off I-20 You can get the same power supply on-line, but it's not any cheaper when You factor in shipping. The One I have is 0-15v and 0-3amp I have it running My labby's and I have no complaints.
