There are a couple of ways these flat laser diodes can be mounted.

The bare diode can be soldered to a copper strip and then soldered or attached with thermal epoxy to the Aixiz diode holder.

The LG 22X round heat sink w/diode shown in the first post,
can be inserted into a machined Aixiz diode holder.

A LM1117 or LM 317 driver or commercial version (Rckstr) capable of 500ma would be required.

They are used on for DVDs, so 650nm...

The frequency on these flat laser diodes is ~655nm.

I also saw this press release today:

To meet this growing demand, this April will see Sharp complete a combined low- and high-power blue-violet laser diode capacity ramp, from 500,000 units per month last July to 700,000 units per month. The company will also increase its monthly production rate of high-power red laser diodes, from 5 million in fiscal 2007 to 7 million in fiscal 2008, says Nikkei.

7 million per month and I had a hard time finding any of them in used DVD burners.

Wow these diodes are impressive! I'm thinking this is how superlazer made his red lasers. It would explain the low amount of current he was putting in to achieve a high mW. It would also explain why he said it didn't use any special glass lens.

I would love to see power testing with one of these diose and a glass lens.

As far as putting into an Aixiz goes, I think the best option would be to try to find the small 3.8mm flat plastic red, the ones tested in the first test, from the blu ray burner. Then mount those into one of sightfx's copperhead's. I'm not sure if he's commercially offering those but after people begin to see this thread and want to achieve higher powers of red maybe 3.8mm diodes will become more popular and he will begin to sell them regularly.

The 3-Pin Flat red diode from the 8X BR sled is 5.6mm across the flat metal base.

I am working on a mount to the Axiz module,
to test a short F.L. Hi-Power lens asssembly.

I found them on 22X LG #GH22LP20 DVD burners produced from May 2008 forward.

I am currently machining a new heatsink to resume the 4-pin Red testing.

Way to go for testing these! a while ago I tested a 24x.. It didn't do so well.. It got damaged at around 250mA's and Maybe it got damaged somehow while I was extracting it or when I hooked it up to the driver.

Finished the 2nd phase of Red diode testing over the weekend.

Several good results ....
and some disappointing.

The good results were on the 3-wire flat Red diodes from the LG 8X sleds.

I have pushed them higher in power (over 516ma) with very little heat generated.

I updated the chart on the first page.

The second 4-wire Red test has been disappointing.

It produced very efficient power up to ~450ma, where it degraded to a low-power laser.

So, combined with the 1st 4-wire failure, I have determined that this diode is NOT the latest flat plastic model I am looking for.

I guess I have to look for some 24X DVD burners to see if they can reach the power levels I am looking for.

P. S. I came up with a nice mounting procedure for the 4-pin Red in an Aixiz module,
for mounting the Hi-Power lens assembly

Hey Larry, what does the mounting procedure involve? What does it look like? I'm curious, since the alignment of the die is very important for lens performance...

Is that LG 8x a BluRay drive? I haven't seen a flat pac yet.

I didn't harvest them, but Daguin furnished the info on the LG 8X BR origin:

The LG has a flat "plastic" red/IR diode in it. I just sent three of them off to LarryDFW so he could test them (Crazy Jay donated one).

They are mounted in a round heat sink.
