I got mine up to 42mW and that seemed like as far as it wanted to go. Not sure why as I couldn't find my multimeter to check current draw while adjusting it.

I know from pre adjustment measurements that it pulls WAY less than half an amp. Think it was under 100mA even. Can't recall at the moment and too lazy to dig up the review thread. Still a pretty nice laser being 520nm and all that good stuff.

Thanks, I won an auction for one, 16 dollars, so I will pot it up a bit, it's likely the smallest of the diodes and the driver may be otherwise limited, I think we are at a point where they expect everyone to pot mod everything and build in an upper limit so they won't get unhappy returns, but at our own risk and all that.

I won an auction for one of these at $17.00. It should be here in the next week. I plan on pot modding mine as well. At that price, who cares if it blows, but I doubt it will with the driver they are using. I would be extremely happy if I can get it to output 50 mW.

The 23 dollar sale shows 31 units sold but only 2 in the month of June and early June at that, so they may do a bulk deal, also they started another auction at 14.88 so the starting bid is not far from what we paid.

I wonder if the driver would power the sharp 505nm ? I really want to see a 495nm but if the sharp 505nm is really a 515nm then what we have here are birds of a feather although this one may not have the headroom.

I think people are power spoiled, hell I know I am. I would like a 495-500 in a 660nm quality beam pushing a couple of watts maybe 3 ??? I will build it into a copper tray full of ice, just let me at it.

Yeah, $14.88 was the starting price for the one I won. If they continue to auction these, they is no point in paying the $23.00 plus for one.

Oh my, they really should change that.

Fourteen Words

I remember the "1488" from the last election. Seems that Trump had a lot of support coming from that side of the fence. YYEESSHH.

Edit: I just got a tracking update on my 520nm 5 mW laser. It is in Seattle, so I should get it tomorrow as long as the post office doesn't lose it for me.

15mm is more than enough to get many watts out generally speaking if it is well pumped, but you'd have to have a well designed cavity, and have it temperature regulated. Would be difficult to end pump something that long, and thermal lensing would be a big issue.

The 15 figure is the focal length of the convex lensed end, one end is flat, the other CVX. The size is 2.5mm dia. x 5.2mm. What do you think these can safely produce?

Nice avatar, I've been drooling over those Taipan lasers.

Well, I got my 520nm laser from Laserlands today, but it has a bad switch. I've contacted them to see if they will replace it. I won it on auction for $17.00 and certainly don't want to have to go through that again to get a working one.

I missed that bit. And to be honest it would totally depend on how you set up your cavity. Linear would not be as much as she would get is if you were at pumped it in a folded or ring cavity. the coherent verdi uses a ring cavity YVO4 that's similar in size and a fairly long LBO if memory serves and they do anywhere from 3-18W or something being pumped via fiber on both sides.

And yeah the taipans are cool :) but way above most people's budget. They're outrageously expensive in many ways. The last time I asked about them when they were a new product the 5W 577s were something like $32,000 just for the laser head. I'm sure they've come down some since 2007-ish (they were new back then), but are still very costly. I'll probably do a review at some point. They don't agree with my camera, and I'd like to do it justice.

Thank you. What makes the cost so high for those Taipan lasers? That is a lot of money!

Aside from everything in the laser industry being overpriced? The name, and reliability vs alternatives. They're a fairly simple laser in principle, but OPSL has a huge number of benefits over DPSS, and the semiconductor wafers are probably not cheap.

Re: PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please

Well, Laserlands sent me a message that told me how to take the switch apart and put it back together so I could fix it. I told them I had troubleshot it to the bad switch, but didn't feel it was my responsibility to repair it and asked them to replace the tail cap where the switch is located. So, they sent me another message saying I can send it back for a full refund, but I won it in an auction for less than they sell them for. I finally took the switch apart and repaired it. But, I'm not a happy camper. I guess I'll close my case and leave appropriate feedback.

Can anyone who has one of these tell me how to get to the driver? I thought it would unscrew in the middle, but no. You can take the lens assy. off and the tail cao too, but that is it. I'd like to get to the driver to pot mod it up to over 40 mW. Anybody? Please?

See my post #3385 for what I'm talking about.

It should unscrew at the middle where that shiny ring is. Maybe they added thread lock to it? Mine unscrews there really easily to the point I did it accidentally when I first received mine. I even suggested they add thread-lock to them

Here is an image I took of mine pulled apart. Not embedded to not waste space on this thread and because of the photobucket fiasco.

Yup, mine comes apart there too. Didn't take much effort to unscrew. Maybe they added thread lock like you suggested, or just tightened it more than on the units we got. :D

Mine is weeks away but I will have it apart the day I get it, I suspect you unscrew the front end retainer and twist the focus ring until the lens carriage is unscrewed then it and the focus ring and the little carrier with lens will be out but I bet the module will press out the back.

Once the little lens carriage has come out leaving that 2 slotted part of the housing visible, it could be higher quality where it unscrews from there but it's probably just pressed in from the back, but I would not try to pull it out by the spring or board that's no doubt soldered right to the diode/heat sink.

Let me look at mine when I get home. I am pretty certain their module was pressed in from the front. I remember seeing tool marks on the brass on mine. I also do not recall ANY retaining rings in mine. The only threads were the tail cap, lens, and center section. Maybe try heating the center shiny ring gently with a torch to see if it breaks down any threadlock?

EDIT: It would appear the module in these laserlands 520nm units was indeed pressed in from the rear, not the front as I had previously thought. Unscrewing the center section on mine, I can see distinct marks in the inside of the front barrel where the module was pressed into it.
