If it's doing 100mW at 8A, it's low hours and in good shape. Get it.

Looks like a home built unit coupled with a Coherent power head. Probably a good unit, I've ordered that same digital volt meter from China and it tracked well and was accurate enough.

I assume that head is supposed to measure from 30 w to 1 w. As I am new at this I am wondering how useful this would be for the diodes that we use? Gozert is selling an Ophir C-A-1-20Y for a reasonable price. What I have been trying to find out though is that I thought the Y designation was for Yag and that it would have to be re-calibrated for visible measurements.

Unfortunately, it looks like from my limited travels...that you need one sensor for under 5 mw and another when you get to the higher levels.

Resolution on that ebay unit is .1 or 100mw to 30 watts. There are other units probably more suited to your needs such as a Laserbee Free Shipping Laserbee? 3 7Watt USB Laser Power Meter Thermopile Ready to Use | eBay - There are other laser power meters which are less expensive such as the Radiant, see more about it here: http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/radiant-x4-lpm-masses-illumination-supply-86296.html

$25.00 USD 405nm 500 700mW Violet Laser Diode S06J Violet Laser Diode Cut Pin 1pcs Package | eBay - I haven't seen these 700mw 405nm single mode diodes go for less anywhere, usually twice this price each. I had one from DTR which put out nearly 900mw, but it died. Next time I will set it lower, DTR sells some diodes set to high output if you ask for it, but I don't recommend it anymore, this is the second diode which has died on me at the max output setting he offered. He does say "not recommended", listen to him!

Interesting, are you considering buying that Andrew? I have been on the fence about buying one.

Yes...a member here has one but he lives in Europe. There is a new Ophir head here for $300 as well as this one. The electronics can be purchased or built...with this you get both. The seller claims sensitivity to .1 which I wonder about since the Ophir 20 C that everyone uses is not according to the Ophir rep I spoke with here in MD.

Here is the thing. It would be nice to be able to measure the lower powers from 5 to 100 mw and to where I think this is going....10 to 20 W

I mean we have one that will do at leas 7 right.

I suspect one will need two heads if you want the sensitivity of the lower ranges.

What do you think?

@cowboy
This is Trent's. Which diode you think he is using?
