I needed something to hold the 5 main Star Trek mods I've created in the past 4 months. I picked up what I thought would be a good case off of ebay for $70 shipped and a couple of good Star Trek decals to apply to it ($10 total for the two).

This is of the case top with the Starfleet Command decal

And on the bottom side, a United Federation of Planets decal

Here's the inside. I'm not too happy that the original foam which is the pick-n-pluck cut blocks type, as you can see it doesn't cut a good outline and pulls completely through. So I've ordered a solid foam sheet the right size and will cut it out (but not completely through) to conform better to each one to make it much nicer looking. The classic phaser mods in the case is my original green mod (the first mod I made) and the blue mod from two new ones. The upcoming 405nm I have a little plain case for it for now

The first of my new additional classic Phaser mods is a 450nm 185mW laser:

It has one of DTR's great PL450B modules (set to 250mA) and of course Jayrob's excellent copper heatsink & custom focus adapter.

Available here: http://laserpointerforums.com/f64/fs-star-trek-phaser-hot-option-individual-parts-46946.html

I love my old green mod Classic Phaser but I wanted this and the next build to have a focus capability and Jayrob did an excellent job matching his focus adapter to the original plastic nose end I sent to him so he could adjust & fit it. He also provided excellent instructions on how to install & align the new focus adapter.

I kept the 3v supply (2xAA) and used the old bulb supply wires for a blue LED just under the grate on top of the phaser as you see here.

Here is the mod just before assembly (but before I changed the focus ring to the new adapter). You'll notice a switch I put on the bottom back end of the phaser, this is an arming switch for safety.

My other new Classic Phaser mod is a 405nm laser I made I call the burner. This one has one of DTR's 16X BDR-209 diode modules (set to 600mA) & of course once again another set of Jayrob's copper heatsink & custom focus adapter.

For this mod I wanted a keyswitch as a safety device. The place to put it seemed to be where the phaser sound select knob is on the rear top. I moved the sound selector switch to the same place I have the arming switch on the last mod.

In this pic just before reassembly you can see I have the focus adapter on as a cover while I took it apart. I tried to use the original 3v supply (2xAA) but this proved a problem even with 2 Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries. The minimum for the laser driver is 3v but add in the current draw of the sound board and after a few seconds the laser starts to oscillate with the sound (the capacitors on the sound board charging & discharging) and it maxs out at around 390mW. But when I'd attach with alligator clips a 14500 Li-ion battery it ran at a full 930mW and it didn't waver with the sound. So I ordered more 14500 rechargeables and am now in the process of modifying the battery compartment to hold two 14500s in parallel to add the current instead of voltage.

Once I do that I'll take some pics burning holes in a pistol target with it & post them here!

Thank you very much!

I live in the Burbank area & unfortunately too close to Bob Hope Airport so I don't point my lasers directly into the sky here (only outside the city in the desert when nobody's around in the sky). At home here in Burbank I only point them at objects that limit their distance like trees, tops of telephone poles, etc so I don't raise the ire of the FAA or police.

Re: My Federation carry case to hold 5 of my Star Trek laser mods plus two other Clas

Finished converting the Burner Classic Phaser mod (405nm BDR-209) from 3V (2xAA series) to 3.7 (2x14500 parallel) and she functions great.

Ok, it seems that the Burner Classic Phaser mod I put together would not be a good idea to bring to the pistol area of my local range, even if it's early enough so nobody else is around me (so only I need safety goggles). When it comes to regular paper firearm targets the Burner practically sets them aflame pretty quick! That wouldn't be good when one would be waiting for the range officer to call a cease fire so I could put out the target before it took out the wooden target holders at the range!

I shot this target from 7 yards and by the time I made it over to put out the cinder circle the hole had gotten pretty large. I know that distance is nothing for the BDR-209 16X which made it pretty quick at burning through!

An active one before I put it out.

Thanks! I'm enjoying having my own little range at home with not only paper targets but also matches & balloons to fire at around the place!

Next up will be my lightsaber build that I completed of which I'll do a thread on that in the near future.

After finishing my First Contact Phaser mod I decided it was time to cut the replacement foam for the case and see if I could get 6 (out of 7) Star Trek mods fit with the new better foam, it did as you see:

Here's a better look at the new phaser:

It has one of DTR's Oclaro 638 modules with the current to set 1.2A & has G-2 lens. It puts out 890mW of beautiful 638nm!

I have the beam focused wide which gives it the vfx look from the show!

:O WOW! This totally took me by surprise! I have never been into Star Trek, but these are amazing! Thank you so much for sharing, and I hope to see more of your work in the future! Now you have me wondering what I can put a laser into... haha

Thanks Nute!

Exactly there are a lot of good potential hosts for lasers! I've seen cool ones on this site others have done!

My next host will be something of Star Trek but not of just a weapon. I procured a particular 32" (length) model kit and also a lighting kit and I am going to add in a 450nm 200mW in it too (I bought a 1ch remote switch & keyfob to control it). Can yes guess what my next laser host is? :D

You are absolutely correct!

The 1/350 scale model, deluxe accessory kit, and 6v remote switch for the laser:

add to that a phaser sound board from a Diamond Select TOS Phaser toy, a DTR PL450B module, a Survival Laser heatsink, and various other parts (i.e. LM350 volt regulator (set to 4.5v), wire, etc.)

I figure this one will take me at minimum two months. Before I can even start putting it all together I need to flat grey primer all of the inside of the hull parts to prevent light leakage where I don't want it and then paint it silver to help distribute the internal lights from the accessory kit more evenly.

Now that is quite the collection. Have the Jayrob phaser in my sig but this is "out of this world";) The Phaser was a gift from my good friend Lazerbeak (Wen).
Klingon action after the starship? Love the remote idea for the starship.
For those looking for an inexpensive case take a look at Harbor Freight. I have 6 filled cases from that look like the case you bought with the same "pick-and-pluck foam. The other half has places to put other things such as pen lasers and there's a foam divider to separate the halves. Have paid from $20-30 for them so they are a pretty good bargain. Look for a 20% off coupon.
This is the unit but it doesn't show the foam spacer that goes in between the top and bottom half.
18 in. x 6 in. x 13 in. Aluminum Case
Solid foam would be better for a nice cutout but I haven't bothered because my cases are chuck full. I compromise by having each laser in a bubble wrap and only handle the cases horizontal (don't carry them by handle). Works for me as I don't ever take them anywhere. The Star Trek phaser is in its own seperate case;)
Think I have posted pics somewhere such as in my tutorials of my cases full of stuff so anyone interested can get the idea of what you can do with them. They can hold a lot of stuff. They have more cases than shown on their site.
Found this image in my "Imageshack" account that shows my 6 bigger cases with the bubble wrap sleeves off of the units. The unit in the middle is my laser projector.

I don't share this stuff to "brag". Members that know me know I do it to share/help.

Thank you Nute & Pman! I'll be starting the Enterprise in a few weeks, still have one more phaser I'm waiting on parts for to complete (a M462 2.2W Classic phaser!). All else is complete just waiting on a heatsink & focus adapter from Jayrob.

You are correct Pman I have decided on some Klingon action after the Enterprise. The biggest model of a Klingon D-7 Battlecruiser is 1/600 scale made by Revell (close enough for me). There is not a light kit for it but I'll make one myself & I'll probably fit one or two either 532nm or 520nm lasers in it!

That is a large, impressive, & beautiful collection you have there Pman! VERY COOL!
