Don't laugh at my video. I'm not a youtube star. :)
Also I need to make a new video as people are not happy with the vertical orientation.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Host: Ehgemus - The Trendkilla
Blade Parts: The Custom Saber Shop

Video doesn't do much courtesy to the brightness at night. Daytime it is not bright at all. I would not even consider it usable in daylight. I am not disappointed in this build at all.

Diode: PL515 Osram 30mw diode. Running at 5mw

Driver: From The Lightning Stalker - Super Miniar 20ma - 100ma

Host: The Trendkilla by Ehgemus (Modified an Existing Host)

PolyCarb Tube: The Custom Saber Shop - 1" Thick Walled
Diffusion Sheeting: 3 wraps from The Custom Saber Shop
Tip: Round Tip fom The Custom Saber Shop
Google "The Custom Saber Shop"

Neodynium Magnet/Epoxy: Michael's Craft Supplies
11/16" Bearing: Purvis Bearings - Temple, Texas
1" OD O-Ring with 5/8" ID: Home Depot

You're a youtube star now!
Good idea on using a magnet to retain the ball bearing with the flip of the wrist!
Do you unscrew the shaft to reset the ball to the bottom of the tube, so that the ball won't shock the diode when it rolls back?

That Ehgemus host looks like it's made for a lightsaber!

:gj:

I don't really know how durable the diode is to be honest. I feel like it should be ok. The ball rolling down the tube isn't that bad, it is the semi hard tap to the tail cap that worries me. I think I would do the driver a bit different next time. It is soldered to the diode. That MAY not be enough support if it gets knocked around. It was soldered well though. I wouldn't do a 532nm or anything dpss. I have seen a flicker but I am pretty certain it is the batteries causing that. They rattle just a bit. I'd bet they are losing continuity momentarily. I'll cut a plastic bottle shim sometime.

Well I can now say the diode is absolutely able to take alot of abuse. The blade was not attached.I dropped this host from my pocket by accident. It fell on cement diode side down. It hit on the corner of the "cap". The batteries pushed the contact board forward just enough to make the laser no longer function. I added a neodymium magnet between the two batteries and pushed the contact board back down. I just not have to solder the wires back to the module because I freaked out and wanted to test the module. If it can take that I am 100% fine with dueling with it.

Nice! Good job on the build, man. +rep

Very cool. The rolling ball, magnet. Brilliant
+Rep for sure

whoaaaaaa. Dude that's awesome! I want one right nowwwwww
Thanks yall!

Any particular reason you have the diode running at only 5mw?

If the beam isn't escaping then you could crank it up a bit without having to worry about eye damage.

I use this as a pointer for work. Yeah I could crank it up to 30mw. My original plan was to have a switch on the bottom with 3 positions instead of two. This way I could switch between two drivers as well as off. I wasn't able to achieve that. I don't plan on this being my last build. This was a good starting point though.

added for clarification

Unnamed LPFer Quote from PM:

I just saw your video...Really neat.

i am not sure I understand what the ball and magnet have to do with it.

What are they doing?

How did you make an adapter so the saber would fit the host?

I wonder what the maximum safe power would be so you could use it during the day.
The ball and the magnet allow for the light to "grow". You know how when a Jedi turns on the lightsaber it "extends". Same concept.

I took the outside diameter of the Polycarbonate rod and gave the dimensions required and the design to Ehgemus. He machined it for me. You can ask him for the "Trendkilla" host and he will know what you are talking about.
Did you come up with that idea for the magnet? If you did, really cool.

Did you make the polycarbonate rod first and then come up with specs for the host or visa versa.

What I am trying to figure out is how to make a custom host...basically for battery(s) and changeable heads...not the screw in type that DTR makes....I wnt to be able to switch out like a high powered 445 and a low powered 520...you get the idea.

Now, are you able to put a focus ring back on your host after removing the sword?

Finally, I have tried to figure out the similist way to make one of those swords...do you have the plans...and site where you purchased materials?

Thanks
Plans... Who needs plans?

Why do you not like the 510 threaded DTR head? You aren't going to put the driver with the battery part anyway. The driver should be specific to the diode. Meaning each diode should have it's own driver.

On the host I have there is a section I could have had threaded to allow everything forward of the momentary button to unscrew. I was not aware of this when I had it machined. I would add that. (For this build I just used JB Weld to keep it together). I would also need to ensure the wires were long enough and have a plug in adapter to quickly disconnect the wires.

The Magnet Idea was my idea some what. I looked at the Wicked Saber's Laser Saber and tried to figure out how they did it. That was the easiest solution I could think of.

As for the Polycarbonate rod: I was previously interested in building a custom lightsaber using LEDs. I found "The Custom Saber Shop" quite a while back. I looked at the specs for the "Tube" and read a few guides. The Outside Diameter (OD) was 1". This means the Inside Diameter of the receiving mount for it needs to be just a hair over 1" (1 and 1/32 is sufficient) with a taper down to 1" if possible. Ehgemus is a phenomenal machinist. I made an extremely rough drawing and after a bit of back and forth explaining my horrible drawing, he understood exactly what I wanted.

If you plan to have someone machine it. Draw it out. Draw lines pointing to everything and make a legend. If you have a working example, or a similar product, include that as well. Anything you can do to better explain is best. At present I don't quite understand exactly what you want. You are going to need to break it down. Start with each and every dimension of each and every section. Mark holes, hole sizes, inside diameters, outside diameters, lengths of sections. You MUST be overly detailed if you want things to come out exactly as you planned. By doing this I was VERY VERY happy with my results.

I realize this is from some months back but somehow I missed it and it sure seems to me many others missed seeing it based on how many comments there were so I'm reviving this and a big +REP. By far one of the coolest things I've seen someone build.

Nice revive. Didn't see this. Nice work on the saber.

Thanks yall. Yeah I kinda thought it slipped under the rug. I thought it would get a lot more hits as well. I have since removed the black paint and added GITD to the "inlays". I have some of that black rubber spray paint that I plan to respray it with. I'm enjoying the silver finish at the moment though.

On the 515 Osram at 5mw...

Is the beam very round and focused like a DPSS but different color of course and does it have a good visible beam in dark or night outside?

Thinking of buying a 515 nm in 5 mw.

There is a visible beam yes. It isn't as bright as a 532nm beam at 5mw, but it's there faintly. The dot is roundish, there is no bar. It is mildly oblong shaped. Mine does have some wings. I have not clipped them because I can't see them when I use it at work in the lit rooms. I'll take a picture and add it to the OP for you. Check back later. I'm in a building where I get no cell reception.
