Copper to 'Burn', My Cu 510 units arrived...

My four copper 510 units arrived from Lifetime17 (Rich) and they look fantastic.

Well, what can I say about Rich and his handy work?

'Exquisite' comes to mind. :)

As soon as he mentioned he was going to make these I contacted him and placed an order for four units.
These are fiddly to make, all hand made to perfection.
A week or two later and they're here.

He packs them in very carefully and ships them very securely, all individually wrapped so as not to get scratched.
The finish on these are amazing, they practically shine all on their own.

One of the units will be for a gift to a good friend of mine here on LPF, Pete (GSS).
He just needs to let me know which diode he wants in it. :beer:

As for the other three units, well I'm planning on putting some relatively high powered diodes in them since they are solid copper.

Any suggestions?
Please feel free to suggest, you guys are way more experienced than me.
I'll try and finish my Genesis RGB unit first though before I get stuck into these.

So without further ado here are the pics.....

Your so welcome my pleasure , yes they are tricky to make and take a while together them correct. Hand made machine work takes longer than a CNC product.

Are these 12mm in diameter, or is the opening 12mm for a module? If it is the latter, then I misunderstood the thread as I thought these were intended as modules for diodes to be pressed into. What is the outside diameter of these "units".

They are 22or 23 mm diameter outside with a 12mm bore for the 12mm modules.

Hi Paul, these are for slipping a 12mm copper module into and lock screwing it into place.
Like the 16X BDR-209 405nm in 12mm copper module from DTR which I think will be one of my choices.

Okay, I was definitely mistaken, then. With an outside diameter of 22mm to 23mm, I think it would have a short duty cycle with a high power diode in it. That means the wall is about 5mm thick. I wouldn't push a BDR-209 diode in one of these. They seem to be unforgiving unless you are careful and have a large heat sink. Very pretty, though.

I've already got two BDR-209 unit from DTR back when he sold them ready made in the 510 Alu bodies and they seem ok but you're right you need to watch the Duty Cycle on these.
I've even got a 520nm 1W in the old DTR Alu version.
But I think the Cu units will look even better with a copper Vape body.
I was hoping the Cu would be a better sink and allow me to go a bit longer without any worries.

In case you didn't know, you can remover tarnish from copper with white vinegar or dilute acetic acid. It is better to spray them with clear acrylic after polishing so it won't tarnish again.

I've got a couple of Sinner's Copper builds that need polishing up again.
Might try the clear acrylic idea.

I've got a couple of copper hosts that were sprayed with clear acrylic before I got them and they still look great. I have another sinner's Cyprus II copper host that tarnishes a lot and white vinegar takes it off with little effort.

Those are purddie! :drool: They look great. If you need a break from building your rgb and you want to build one of these, just saying. :D



@ Paul, thanks for the heads up about the white vinger and the spray aclrylic got a couple of solid cu builds that could use it. :thanks:

hehehehe I hear ya Bob, yes I may just do these ones first, at least the shiny one for GSS first.
My RGB will have to wait.

Actually Rich did make one a little different to the other three.
He told me he had an inspiration on this one.
Have a look at the pic bellow, the one that's second from the right is a bit different, the heatsink threads/fins tapper in a bit.

You can take your pick, you can have this one or one of the other three 'Regular Thread/Finned' ones.

A clear protective coating is definitely the way to go with highly polished copper; my first build from 2012 has a coated copper heatsink , and still looks new today.
