Yes, it is possible.
There will be some practical problems with machining metal for heatsinking and getting enough Amp's out of the batteries.

You have given me ideas for boosting the output of one of my flashlights.

Machining metal for portable heatsink should be a problem, agreed, but a flashlight with 2.5W red output will surely be big.. imo

After seeing this I thought I would get mine out and check it out, I haven't done anything with it since I took it out of the projector and all I can say is HOLY SH*T is that thing bright. Even at the 1.2A my power supply was putting out that thing is blinding. I have a Raidfire host from LarryDFW that I was going to put a 445 in but I may change that and see if I can get this guy into it.

Here is a 12 watt Red LED build in the host that I supply:

What about using forced air cooling?

I wonder if you could make a heatsink out of low melt (95C) BiSnPb alloy...
Then blast air down the stack to keep it cool, if it works for a laptop CPU it ought to work fine for this.
Or salvage a used heat pipe from an old notebook, Apple Macbooks are nice for this as the "stack" is fairly small indeed.

I really like the square shape of the beam

No need to buy a separate lens for this host. The lens in the Phatlight works just fine.

I don't think there's anything particularly dangerous about this LED. It's just pretty damn bright if you give it enough juice and as I'm sure you know, if you stare at the sun for a period of time, it's not going to be good for your eyes. Also, if you pump up the amps it's going to get hot and you might burn your fingers. A laser diode is a much more concentrated beam of light and does present some very real dangers. An LED spreads its light out.

Thank you so much for you very instructive reply. I had not guessed this software would require such a convoluted means of doing something as simple as inserting a picture. There must be complexities of which I am not aware. Thank you for your help. I was much vexed after after spending a great deal of time searching this site and and finally requesting information from whomever ignores the "contact us" address.

The LED is a point source emitter, meaning it put out light from a very small point (in this case a WHOLE LOT). That means that the eye will also collect the light on just one small, concentrated spot on the retina, resulting in a high risk of eye damage. So DO respect this LED as you would with a laser, even if the LED was only rated 1W input power.
