If you literally filled the box up with LEDs and somehow lit them all, then you would be correct. Chances are you would most likely be putting them ON a cube, and not in the cube. The surface area of a 10x10x10 LED cube would be 600. That's not really what I was wondering, but whatever.

Are people just wiring them up 1 by 1 along a huge cable, or putting them all in a huge breadbox or something? How do you make a grid of LEDs? Google isn't really so helpful with this. A link to a noob tut would be helpful. I'm electronically challenged.

they are called led matrix cubes,
3x3x3 LED Cube
But we all have our uses, i am using some of mine for automotive lighting, a cheaper alternative for neons.
Also using them to make portable lighting effects with some lenses i got.
Leds uses are infinite, just use your imagination.

That's pretty cool, I've never seen that before. Thanks for helping out a noob in need. You can count me in for 100 reds, 100 greens, 100 blues, and 200 whites at 2-3 cents a led.

No, inside a cube so you can create 3D light graphics. They'd be spread out as well, since there really isn't much resolution.

You can hold them together with suspended wires or other means. For example, you could solder one lead to the ground line (or power line if using a sink-based driver), and the other to the signal lead.

Now we just need a group buy for Texas Instrument TLC5940 chips.

Wink Re: Wtb: Leds

LOL, yeah, 9 x 16 channels drivers ..... and a 4096 RGB leds cube, all hand soldered and aligned

Well, can be a good art/ambient light, anyway ..... if someone dare to try to just imagine about wiring all together

Oh, BTW, for the "suspend the leds on a cable" question, remember that there's also transparent shrinking tube, not just black one ..... and that exists also double-face SMD leds (was used mainly in some old laptops, so i don't know if they still commercialize them, sorry) ..... or, at least, common SMD leds can be soldered paralleled in couples, so they are visible from any angles ..... and, if this is not convenient, there's leds with a "inverse conical top", that are visible from sides more than from top ..... just few others crazy ideas, as usual

It'll depend on price for me. At the rate of $20-30 per thousand I might get a few thousand since I won't be able to get a price like that for a while. Still, I may not go all out in case these really aren't great diodes and we want to try others.

They have a policy to replace all dead or dimming leds on next placed order. so if we order some now and they die just send me the number and it will be added on to our next order for free.
The manufactures have been making them for a over 5 years and are the main supplier for making leds signs and led tube manufacturers.
So they have to have a decent quality i would think.
I think the last time i counted we are up to 5,000-6,000.

I still think we should do a test. A week test sure takes a while, but there is a few things you'll find out right away... Are they bright enough, do they have a matching emission angle, and are the colours and hues good etc?

Well to do the test is going to cost about 32$ us to get it shipped to my door they said the leds are free but they could not lower the shipping charge anymore so i could pay the 32$ then put it on the total to cover the cost.
But with a replacement policy it does make it a bit less needed when the cost is so high. its up to you guys. have a vote and post how many you want of each color.

Nice update.
I have found a us supplier.
but it would require us to order 12,000
And would be 0.02625 per led
I could order a small amount very cheaply to test.
They are located in California so free shipping so for a little more we get faster shipping and but a little more by about 0.004$ per led
and if we can get the order over 50k well get another 10-20% off but i doubt we have enough people to get that number.
here is the info on the leds i am still requesting more

Question Re: Wtb: Leds

^ Are them 5mm ones ?

And i suppose the values in the table are, in order:

VF -- VF(max) -- nm -- nm(max) -- mcd -- mcd(max) -- ?? (don't know what the "10" can be, surely not the current :P)

Except for the white about the nm, ofcourse .....

i redid the pic
It read correct now
I am trying to find the degree but i thin its 15 or 30.
So this supplier is in the us so i can order a few hundred of each very cheaply and see how they go, put a few on for 24 hour burn and a few ill use in my car.

I don't really care whether you get a test batch, but IMO the faster shipping deal isn't worth it. I change my mind on the colors, I think I'd just like 600 blue. Are we going to have enough people to get 12,000?
