This laser is a beast. It puts out over 100mW for the first few seconds and then goes down to 80ish and 70ish. I only leave it on for 15-20 seconds at a time and then turn it off for 15-20 seconds. If I use the laser like this the output stays above 70mW. By far the tightest beam I have ever seen. Laser power drops down to 35mW if it is too hot like leaving it on for a minute and then turning it off for 30 seconds. It really likes short duty cycles. I am sure the ambient 90 degree heat didn't help either though. Maybe I should move to Alaska for my laser. I will try to get picks up eventually. This is the best deal ever. Plus it came with some awesome optics! A nice large IR filter too. I was able to retest my Rayfoss 500mW laser and it is at 475mW. My Kaidomain "200mW focusable" laser was at 75mW.

Yobresal, you should just have a heart and give it to Scopeguy. Think of how good you would feel as he posted pics enjoying the hell out of it. ;-)

yea my 473 rpl 25 puts out 50 for about a minute or two then to about 25 or 30 they have a very limited duty cycle but they sure are perty

(This statement may or may not be relevant. I need to do more thorough testing before I can safely say)

SOOOOO. I fired up my 100mW projector (well now it is brew city musics) to test it out and give it one more go before I ship it off and decided to compare it to my "75mW" RPL. I felt like the comparison was really off as my 100mW projector looks like twice as bright. I took readings of both lasers and the RPL measured at 75 with peaks in the 90mW range whilst the projector held a steady 99-100mW. This did not seem right to me. I then put the IR filter over my RPL and my stomach sank to the floor. This laser either has a shoddy IR filter or no filter at all. After using the filter the laser measures in at 30mW peak with 20-25mW average. I then tried putting the filter on the projector to see if it was possible that the filter was just absorbing and reflecting the blue light but it only lost a few mWs. Needless to say I am pretty well pissed off about this. I feel like I have been taken and I feel like a fool for not noticing it either. I was wondering why it didn't sting the skin. Now I know.
So what do I do?
Open a paypal dispute?
Try to reason with darklanz outside of paypal to arrange a return?
Just accept the fact that I have been screwed?

Well I only have 7 days to reason before the 45 days for a PP dispute are over so Hopefully he will check his Pms soon.

That's horrible to find out.. unfortunately it's also a huge grey area. I don't necessarily think it would be fair to pin it on the fellow who sold it to you, since he likely bought it from Opto believing it was a blue 70. Ordinarily, I wouldn't question Opto's power quotes, so most likely neither did he. There's no law that says the output of a laser must be of one pure wavelength, so technically it's performing as advertised. Since you know a bit about lasers, you know that a reputable seller of lasers would not include IR in the output rating, but it's not the law that binds them so much as whether or not they can sleep at night. You certainly could try reasoning with the seller, but I don't know if that's really the person to blame.

IMO your best bet is to try to recoup some of your losses by selling it, or you could try contacting Opto to complain.

From what I know Viasho doesn't usually IR filter their Blue handhelds, this is why Pseudonomen137 always added a filter the the Blue Viasho units he sold. I wouldn't think darklands intentionally tried to screw you over, but the fact that you have an underspec unit would piss me off.

I am going to charge up some fresh batteries and take multiple measurements with and without different filters. Maybe I fucked up somewhere and not anyone else. I havent taken that into consideration.

Honestly, I think it's imposible that a blue handheld canreach 100mW of pure blue, I was really stranged when I saw your first post!

That is a good point. My meter could be crap at this point. It has been through a lot. It has a 1 watt limit and it has been hit with over 1 watt of green light many times. Also itt is the same meter thatt reads 405nm incorrectly so maybe it has trouble with 473 as well. I am going to test this laser based on visual brightness and burning capabilities as well as my meter. I have a pretty good eye for this sort of thing after owning hundreds of lasers.
