i understand that crazy i do... but you would be surprised on what some us buy early on.. i have a tote with various electronic parts and a couple of projector lens in it.. just need to buy diodes.. but i get your thoughts

Unfortunately most new members just buy a cheap laser and then takes months for them to realize its not a good laser and buy parts to build their own. Now occasionally new members buy a ton of cool stuff and start their time here running but unfortunately that is maybe 1/100 new members. I could be that one but everyone tries to say they are the one and most of the time we realize they aren't.

I have since talked to JMiller and have since come to the conclusion that my post here was in error.. I did read all of the fine print.. I was just stating a opinion is all and I think that its a great idea... but this thread is not locked and its was apart of the general forum so why should I not be able to post my thoughts here just saying

Surprisingly, I do not get the impression from any of the persons I had to say "sorry, can't do" to that they were in it for personal gain. Most wanted to contribute something they had. Still, I knew there had to be some rules in place to protect those who would have skin in this and ultimately I believe it will make for a better experience.

One thought comes to mind that I would love to see happen. Vortish, or any of you guys who just started here, y'all should start a "Noob only" box and make your own rules and see how it goes. I would not in the slightest bit be surprised if it turned out awesome. I almost thought to do one myself but I just barely have the time to do this one.

If the current box works out well I have every intention of doing this again. Maybe on the second go around I will do two boxes, one for vets and one for noobs. Discrimination at it's best I suppose.....

It's good that everyone seemed to want to contribute! I'm glad you didn't detect any "take-the-box-and-run" attitudes That says something about the members of this forum (a positive thing lol).

Haha, maybe we should start a n00b-only box! Of course we would still have to have some requirements... Probably along the same lines as yours, but maybe 2 months joined, 100 REAL posts, and at least +5 rep. That way we don't just get random people showing up and taking the box with its contents

Would the 2nd box be a continuation of this box (with the items in box #21 re-used) or would it be brand new items, fresh from you? Or maybe some re-used and some fresh?

I will be glad to help. Shoot me an email through the forum email tool and I will share my experience and some tips. In fact, you can put me down first or second on your list and I will load your box with some goodies for the "Noob Box". You might need to bend your rules a little for this to happen, and I could certainly understand if you won't

Just FYI that wasn't the deal breaker, I wasn't even aware of what you're referring to at the time I PM'd you. The decision was solely made on length of membership, the posts numbers weren't really a factor either.

I guess I want to say it one more way and then we can hopefully put it to rest: having rules for a box like this is sensible and reasonable. The benefit of these rules are evident, and without having to explain them any more than has been done I think most would agree. Once you put the rules in place, particularly the inclusion criteria, what's even more important is that I follow them to a tee. No bending on my part because I'm the organizer, that's not fair to everyone, especially those who decided to sign up. Once I start bending the rules and 15 people have made the list I'm basically changing the terms of agreement for everyone. There are some on the list who may not have joined under different terms, especially an "all comer's" type of inclusion. With a few exceptions I can almost bet that almost everyone on the current list has had some sort of relationship with the others and a sense of trust. Tmack sees Crazyspaz and Flamingpyro and Daguin and he says "sure, I know those guys, I'll join, I've got some cool stuff I'd give to guys like that" (never mind it's the guys coming after he will give to, but you get the point). On the other hand, Tmack sees a list of members who've just joined and thinks "maybe next time" and doesn't sign up. If I go and change things up after someone has committed to the effort I'm really not keeping my word and the reasons some may have signed aren't regarded. That wouldn't sit well with me and it shouldn't with anyone.

When I first joined this forum as a Noob I probably would have thought these types of rules made sense but shouldn't apply to me for the reasons they were created. I know I would have been a good list member even if I was a noob, at least in my own estimation. That's because I know me and the stuff I've got. But, I wouldn't expect the vets to take my word or my estimation of myself at face value either.

When I joined I actually read the sticky posts I was referred to and it was probably the best thing I ever did as far as this forum goes. I distinctly remember the one post in one of the about the party analogy. It made perfect sense and was an excellent description of how things work around here. Hopefully someone reading this knows where that analogy is and can post a link to it. It is so relevant right now I think.

Believe it or not I think almost all of the vets are excited about the Noob and wanting them to get involved and be a part of things. Everyone was a Noob at one time and without the Noob we wouldn't have what we have today. I cannot think of a better resource anywhere for this hobby anywhere else that's this thorough, knowledgable, and broad. Not to mention it's free. And to prove my argument about old timers wanting the Noob to be a part of things I am to only going to help you start your box, I will even send you a bunch of good stuff to start it with if you email me. Forget what I said about putting me on the list above. I will just mail you a box of stuff at my expense so you can start a really good Noob box.

Thanks for the words of understanding.. That is really all I wanted to do by join the traveling box of crap.. But i am happy to work on the noob box and if you still want to be some were on the list I will be happy to accommodate you
I think this will work out for the best of both new guys like my self that want to end up vets and help new guys out like your self... Chronic was just stating his opinion no blood no foul... I am going to try to get this box shipped by the 24 of this month the latest it will go is the 28 just depends on pay days and how much I work and school... OMG another teen some guys are saying Nope look at my Bdate guys Im almost fourty have kids that are older that some members... Party Analogy

PS - any who haven't really should read the stickies. Atleast in the Welcome Forums and Rules Forums. These give you a guidebook to not getting red dots. Until very very recently I had never received a red bar. This was due to having read the stickies and having an understanding of social cues. I am also very non-confrontational, so if I have ever been mad at you you likely wouldn't know it. Luckily I am not one to hold a grudge so it troubles me little.

Almost forty.....still wet behind the ears. Wish I was almost 40 again, those were the days.
Actually, I wish I were like 16 again but who doesn't. Those were really "the good days". Not a real care in the world; hard to believe there was a time in my life like that. 75 cents a gallon gas, $1 can of snuff, long summers working as a raft guide down the Guadalupe river getting paid to drink other peoples beer. Sometimes I wonder if that part of my life ever really happened.

Adam, why don't you post some pics of the decals you've put together. I think they are all pretty cool but I'm probably not the best authority on what everyone will like. Then those who will be receiving them can have some input on what they may want them to look like.

I'm kinda breaking one of my 10 commandments here but let me explain before I'm crucified for this

The rule about not saying what you are going to put in was to protect the box from any scavengers before it even got started and and avoid people getting upset when the box came to them and the person before them took something they knew was there and wanted for themselves. It just makes more sense to get a box not knowing what's going to be in it and not having any particular expectation. It also keeps it a little mystery, like Christmas morning (or other gift giving holiday you may celebrate). Having said that, I don't think what I am about to reveal is going to ruin anything. I think you'll agree...

Adam has a vinyl decal side business and wanted to make some cool decals with LPF related themes for everyone participating. They were one of the things he was going to contribute to the box. Instead of moving him up the list a few slots (which would only give the last few the benefit of his labors) he's agreed to send a bunch to me to add to the box when it starts so everyone could potentially get one (or more I suppose). I don't know how big they are (maybe he will explain) but they shouldn't take up any real space at all.

He asked me to help pick out some of his designs but I'm asking him now to let y'all pipe in if you're interested in these. I can imagine there might be a bit of discussion about this so please just PM him your ideas or input rather than post a bunch of conversation here. This could start to hijack the thread a little I suppose ( I will let it hijack Adam's mailbox instead )

There is one I like but I'm not saying it here, I don't want people thinking me strange for admitting it.....Thanks in advance Adam.

I just received a couple of items I plan place in the box. This first order was just a test run to make sure quality was up to the claim. Time to order a few more, since these were nice enough my new wife wanted us to keep them. :beer:

Can't wait for this one to get going. I need to figure out what else I want to put in.

I am waiting for the box to arrive before I start digging out items. I have started to clean house and get ready for my move so I know if I dig laser parts out now, I will just misplace them. Don't want to drive myself crazy RElooking for them. I mean I have a good idea of what I have and where it is but as ya'll know, whenever you clean, you always find a ton of random junk

If I could go back I'd choose 30 years old. Young enough to enjoy it, yet old enough to be taken seriously. BTW, Jeff, I posted the thermal conductivity of copper, aluminum, and titanium. The SI units are watts per meters kelvin, and titanium has a poor thermal conductivity. One thing I already knew was that carbon, in the form of crystalline diamond has the highest thermal conductivity of almost any single element I can think of. And when mixed with silicone thermal compound makes an excellent heat sink compound. Industrial diamond powder is fairly inexpensive, too.

Here are some decal designs I have in mind. Thanks to Tmack and Hakzaw for some suggestions

1) Laser Man, holding a "501b" laser. I took the outline of the 501b host and added the little white accents to give it some character. This one is a multi-color decal so the beam and the little man can be different colors.


2 & 3) "My Other Ride Is a 445." This one just has that statement with a laser beam either going through the center of the numbers or on the bottom. It's blue for obvious reasons



4 & 5) Laserist On Board - With an option saying "Little Laserist on Board."



6) This one is specifically for little laserists


7) Laserists Do It In The Dark! This one seems to be pretty popular, and was thought of by hakzaw.


8) And last but not least there's just this pretty basic "Warning" decal.


That's all I've got so far. If you have any new suggestions or have some changes you'd like to recommend, PM me! I'll take everyone's feedback into consideration.

As for the size of them, I'll probably do a few different sizes. Maybe a 4" and a 6" version of the Laser Dude, probably a 6-8" wide "My other ride is a 445," and "laserist on board."
It really just depends on what the decal is meant to be used for; if it's a car decal it'll be bigger than a decal I'm assuming will go on a laptop or something.
I'll probably do around 25-30 decals total, in all different colors and all different sizes. You can take as many as you want but remember there are 19 other people who may want one too
If the box comes and you don't get the decal you want, shoot me a PM - these are for sale too!

Also I want to thank Jmiller for letting me do this. Now everyone can have laser decals!
