Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

Jeff, if you don't mind (and if everyone else is alright with it) I'd like to be added a little further up in the list. Not so I can get more stuff, but because after lots of searching and thinking, I've come up with some really neat things I can contribute, and I want to spread them among everyone. :yh:

I'm sorry but you have been on here for how long 67 days and you have lots of laser items to contribute

I tend to agree with bubonic and I am also wondering how you even got on the list now

Heck I have years of stuff here so move me up also Jeff.

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

Sorry for the confusion guys - I don't want to be moved ABOVE anyone else! That would be rude to even ask. Jeff said I'd go at the bottom (#20) but I thought he might let me go to the next slot available (I think it's 13 or 14?). If you guys don't want that, then it's fine. I just wanted to share some some stuff I got recently with everyone. I'm perfectly fine where I am, though. :yh:

Sorry guys.

I think they are more interested in what you recently received or obtained and want to share

Lets all be content with our spots...Admittedly, when Tmack said he had some c-mount heatsinks i wished i was below him on this list- but did i post to ask to be added after him? No. Just be content, you guys are making far too big a fuss out of this- its meant to be a nice thing to possible help out everyone. And adam, no offense, but i dont think you should be on the list- i think the rules as stated by jmiller originally should be followed without exceptions, sorry. Just my opinion.

You're #11.

Maybe you should stop posting till your number is up. I think it would make everyone happy.

I'm not on the list yet. Sorry to keep bothering you.

Livinloud, Jeff didn't want us posting what was going in the box but I'll PM whoever wants to know.

Edit: It appears as if no one wants me participating. So, just forget it I guess... I won't participate

Vacuum tubes? It's been 27 years since I did anything with those. I think they may be helpful to anyone setting up a gas laser. They can come in handy when working with HV. 6LQ6 would drive a flyback. Hmmm.

:shhh: We used to make linear amplifiers with 6LQ6's for 27 mHz

Adam, I dont think anyone wants you to drop out of this. Let me see if I can reword what I've read and if it makes more sense to you this way (I am just rewording things, not saying I believe this):
You didnt fit the requirements at first
Obviously you talked to Jeff and got his OK to be on the list (its up to Jeff to say who can join)
Sounds like people don't agree with this (understandable, everyone has their opinions here)
Based on the original requirements you wouldn't be on the list but now you are. I think all they are saying is just be happy with being on the list and don't 'push' your luck. If you are last on the list, at least you are on the list.

I think that is what people are trying to say. I mean to me, idc if you are on the list or not since everyone is after me and I'm just looking to donate stuff. Jeff has been kind enough to try and make it worth my time and money and I thank him for that.

As far as posting what you are putting in, yes he said not to post what we actually put in, however I'm pretty sure he said we can talk about things we might put in. Doesnt mean that since you said it, its going in the box but its cool to think what might be in the box. Plus if we knew EXACTLY what was in the box, it wouldnt be as fun. Half the fun is opening the box and being like "Wow I can use this and this oh and that" Hmmm what can people use of mine?

You're basically right on all of that.
I do want to clarify what was happening with my position... Jeff was going to wait and put me at #20, which I am fine with. However, now that I've got some really neat stuff to add (that I want to share with you guys) I was hoping I could go ahead and be placed at the next open spot. I was NOT trying to get in front of anyone.
I probably should've just PM'ed Jeff about that. My bad guys.

Like you said, half the fun is just the excitement and surprises of what's in there! But since you guys may be happier if I explained, here goes:
I bought the parts to build a Spirograph. I really wanted one to do some mini light shows and photography with. When I bought all my parts, I got a little extra of everything (cheaper to buy in bulk). Having this extra stuff, I thought about what to do with it and the wandering box jumped to my brain. I thought it'd be awesome for another new member who's in on this box to get a DIY Spirograph kit with instructions so they could have their very own Spirograph, too.
Hence, why I asked if I could be at spot 13 or 14 (or whatever the next slot is) rather than spot 20. I thought the Spirograph would be more beneficial to a newer user than to Jmiller who probably already has one.

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

Ok, ok, ok....time out. Adam, I think you've made your point well on this last explaination you gave. I had to go back and read your first post twice for me to get what you were saying. Not that it wasn't clearly written but for some reason it seemed to emphasize the list position more than your reason for wanting the move. Again, it's not that it wasn't clearly written, it's just the way my mind works and probably other here too. I think you were correct that that should have been in a PM but since we've gone public with this here we are. I appreciate what you want to do and I know you are eager to contribute more than take away simply because I know you very well. Everyone else does not however, so I respect their concerns as well. It's not personal, it's unfortunately about past history in similar efforts that didn't go well. It's not like all of us live in the same community, see each other at the kids soccer games, local bar, work, etc. every day and have the sense of trust that comes with genuine familiarity. We are an electronic and somewhat anonymous community living mostly behind our words here. Familiarity and trust takes a lot longer here and generally requires people engage in some sort of exchange of goods over time (not always but generally that seems to be the case). I've watched the forum longer than I've been a memeber and have studied the LPM society well. It's pretty simple to get along and build a good reputation, but that doesn't mean it's easy.

I am in a tricky, somewhat delicate position here. On the one hand I am friends with you and want to see you succeed here as a successful LPM contributor and eventually a trusted veteran. You've earned my trust. On the other hand, I do not expect anyone here to feel obligated to extend their trust on my behalf and that's why my solution was to put you where I put you. While I personally would be ok with having you anywhere on the list, I'm not going to take that liberty now. It's not my liberty to take as the organizer and I never intended it to be.

I think I have a solution that will make everyone happy and turn this into a good opportunity for everyone, let you earn some reputation and trust around here, and leave the list exactly the way it is. Basically it's a way for everyone to get what they want. Since I am the organizer I will incur the expense of it myself. I will PM you later and explain.

Two more to add to the list a little later, possibly three.

Found more cool stuff today in my call room I forgot about. Pretty sad when your stashing excess stuff in a call room.

Cheers!

Well said JM and I agree fully and I do think since you started this what ever you say goes as there
has to be some moderation to get this thing going I believe once it makes a round or two it can
sustain it's self and if you need any help I will back you up with any thing you need, answering
questions anything you let me know, you the man !

I understand. I guess I just assumed everyone else would trust me to move up higher, without stopping to think about how they felt. Heck, if I was in their situation, I probably wouldn't really want some noob to participate either. Sorry about that, everyone.

I can see why it takes a while to gain trust here, and I can also see where exchanging goods will usually help with that; it's something tangible, rather than simply words on a screen.

Also, I understand what you mean about being the the tricky situation. I appreciate that you trust me, and I agree that they don't necessarily have a reason to trust me yet. Hopefully that will change eventually but only time will tell.

Thank you for trying to make it the best possible experience for everyone. Looking forward to hearing your solution :yh:

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

Two, possibly three spots left. I've updated the list to what I believe to be current. If you see something wrong with it or I said I'd put you on it and didn't, please contact me so I can make corrections.

Just finishing out a brutal 30 hour shift and am about to go to the house and crash. Back on the clock at 7pm again tonight. There is truly no rest for the wicked.....

My mind is numb and my eyes are blurry, can't even think straight right now. Good thing the last 6 hrs is just admin stuff. If was doing my real job right now I'd be scared for my "clients". I am probably not even going to mess with the box today, I cannot remember where I parked right now, much less where some of the things I was going to out in the box may be. Today's what, Tuesday? Tomorrow should be a good day for hunting and digging for this stuff I know I have. When I decided to do this it was because I found some more stuff I had forgotten about tucked away in a cabinet. It got me thinking of other stuff I had stuffed away that would be fun to gift to others. Now I just need to dig it out from where ever it's hiding and pack it up. I'm thinking Thursday the box should go out, but I reserve the right to retract that possibility for stated reasons.

Adam, I'll be PMing you my idea a little later when I wake up. I think you'll like it.

Good night for now, will answer outstanding PM's sometime after 7pm central time. Thanks again for everyone's support and encouraging and kind PM's. I'm actually having more fun than I expected already.

Cheers!

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

I understand some the criteria for this but not all of it.... I mean ya I been apart of the forum for just a little while but here is the thing.... Doing something like this there will be a big part of the overall forum members who would like to do this.. Every one on here for the most part I bet at least the ones that have been here a long time have neg rep in their statistics... Every one makes Mistakes... To Err is Human.. Quote Albert Enstine.. I think that having a positive feedback is fine but I think that if your going to do some thing like this then have two list one for the longer time members and on for noobs like me that way we dont feel left out of some thing that could be a lot of fun... I think it is a great Idea and could make some really lasting friendship.. Like I said im not here to ruin the party I just want to be included in such a great Idea... The forum vets I have talked to say this is kind of a big family and family help each other out as I have seen.. Making contact with some really helpful members has made my thirst for Building Lasers that much more My wife is tired of it though. Just stating my opinion

The thing is, I am not sure what you newer members can really contribute- no offense meant, it's just the newer members by definition haven't been around the hobby as long, and therefore won't have as much "stuff" accumulated.
