Sigh...... I knew this laser hobby is a whirlpool for monnney and I was right... WELP there goes my saving plans.

I'm curious about how much would it take for someone with the hands of a pianist to assemble a laser for someone with twigs stapled to burger patties for hands.

  • Starting from the host by Grainde. $55
The LEGENDARY Kryton Groove : $32
Aqua GITD ring: $5

And now the heatsink....which I'm not sure what kinda heatsink the Kryton Groove can take but I don't plan for too long of a duty cycle.. maybe in the 30 seconds-1 minute range so an aluminium heatsink would be cool.

So.... all of the above plus extra for the assembling ... how much will this set me back?
 





So I take it you have never had a groove before :)

Kryton grooves have a heatsink already,which the diode gets pressed into. Therefore you have to buy the bare diode and press it, then solder the driver to it. I can take a picture of my groove when I get home, but if you do some searching im sure you can find pics here on lpf.

Here's an old, old, old (did I mention old?) pic of the original Kryton smooth head.
I still have one of these old hosts in my safe ;)
The diode is pressed directly into the head
The driver is attached to the diode
Way back in the day, we still used wire between the driver and the diode ;)

Ohhh... VERY modular...
So no worry about twisting the wires off the driver when you screw the sink on... niiiiice.

So basically there's 2 parts to a Kryton Groove if I buy the lens,diode,driver combo off DTR and the Groove off Grainde...

Is it something someone with burger patties for hands can do ?

I like the krypton Grove host. However the battery contact inside can be tricky depending on how you set it up. Second you'll need a diode press to set the diode and carefully solder the diode to the driver after its pressed.

That's an expensive diode, in my honest opinion if you question whether your hand steadiness is going to be an issue you might want to have someone build it for you. Also the diode press is going to run you $15 iirc. That's an X-drive so you'll need two lipo. 16340s seem to fit best. The 18350s I've tried are to be long.

Alright so... who do I choose to build for me ..cos.. there are LOTS of people of LPF with Blord being the most well known , but there's also tons of other guys.... so slightly lost here.... and generally how much will they charge for assembling?

I can't speak for Grainde, but you could PM him about possibly doing this.
Typically I would offer to do this for you but I've been traveling around a lot.
In fact I did this same build. It will look something like this. (GTID not charged)

I actually only charge $ 5 for all but the red the GITD, which is $ 8 and that includes both the rings and strips! :beer:

hmm... I initially wanted an orange-red GITD color but I wasn't sure how much would that be...

I would like a 462nm M462 with Orange red GITD , polished host please.

The original (Kryton Smooth) is a bit smaller.
It was designed for two 16340 batteries.
It also did not have a focus knob
The other main difference is that the body and head are "smooth".
They have no grooves cut into them
This one has been polished

The Kryton Groove will take an 18640.
It also has a bit more massive head that has been "finned.
