the DT0811 is brighter then the 803T?

So I finally got the "weaker" xbox diode out of its heatsink and mounted it in a dorcy Jr. heatsink/flexdrive..etc When I turned it on i really didn't think it was going to work since I had to use a Dremel to get that really annoying heatsink off the diode. I clicked the switch and for one second I thought something was wrong, but then beautiful violet light. I did a match test and it lit it pretty quickly.
After I had lit the match the beam was quite visible considering it was in broad daylight. I waited till it got dark and for some reason it was smoky outside...SWEET! It is running at 110ma's and is at least 2x brighter then any of my other blu-rays where.
I will post a video as soon as I can.

Re: Unexpected high power

It might not be power, it could be an unusually long wavelength. Nice going if its a strong diode though :D

So this is the DT811 sled diode? :p

Re: Unexpected high power

I'm wondering now if it is the DT-0811 diode.  I have one (that I was going to be putting up FS later today) that also displays this.

I built two lasers in the same host to figure out how they would go together (so I could help noob's with the build).  In one of them I put a DT-0811 diode @ 100mA, just cause I had it here.  It is putting out 70mW.  In the other I put a PHR-803T diode @ 165mA.  It is putting out 150mW.  When I took them outside to see them in the sky, I thought I had them mixed up.  The wrong one was brighter.  I brought them back inside and double checked.  I hadn't mixed them up!

The 70mW laser LOOKS brighter than the 150mW laser, even though it is putting out less than half the light!  If they are shining alone, I do not "see" much of a difference.  The DT-0811 looks a bit "bluer", but that is all.  The difference is really only evident to me if there is another beam shining next to it.  It is much like the 660nm vs. 635nm difference.  The 635nm LOOKS a bit brighter if you shine it alone, but if you shine it next to a 660nm beam, the difference if clear.

The 150mW laser burns more and faster than the 70mW.  The 70mW does burn stuff, just not as fast.  I haven't done any "long-range" comparisons of them.  I haven't done any beam characteristics comparisons.  I have only shined them next to each other.

Maybe Ace will chime in here.  He got to see the beams next to each other as well.  Has anyone else built a laser using the DT-0811 diode?  We need to get these to someone with a spectrometer.  I thought I had this worked out, but I didn't.  Anyone with a spectrometer out there wanna do a comparison?  I have a few others here.  I wanted to do destructive testing of them to determine the upper limit of their power, but I haven't got nearly enough response from my WTB thread to be able to do the testing I wanted to do.  Maybe I can salvage the effort (and cost) with a wavelength test instead.  Plus, with a wavelength test, the diodes are still viable and available to build lasers with after the tests :)

Hmmm.  Maybe we need a new thread or just re-name this one?  How about it Hydro?  You willing to change the title of your thread to attract more discussion of the DT-0811 diode?

Peace,
dave

Re: Unexpected high power

hmmm that would be really cool if all the 0811 diodes were a higher wave length.

dave what sale thread are you talking about that is lacking interest?

give her a death test! see how much power it can really handle!

I posted a WTB thread so I could get enough 0811 diodes to do destructive testing, to determine the range of current it could take.

I've gotten four (4) :(

I thought that there were more of these just languishing in the shadow of the 803T. Apparently I was wrong.

Re: Unexpected high power

dang i thought there were a bunch too...

watch it will end up being a more powerful diode and we will switch directions to that. lol

that would be our luck!

well i if i come across any i will keep you in mind

Re: Unexpected high power

I have a DT0811 diode set up inside a "Lazerboy" spirograph(in the module that came with the Lazerboy).. It is being driven @ 125mA. I also have my 803T build @ 160mA, and another 803T @ 150mA.

I'll compare the beams tonight and try to get a pic..

Edited for typos...lol

ok now that you posted that dave i predict that 0811 diodes just went up in value 38.6% ;D

Re: Unexpected high power

So, now the theory is that 811s are usually of a higher wavelength? I am interested in how this turns out, one for a burner and one for a pointer, please post results when you get them, I am quite interested in what will come out of this theory.

Glasserfan, did you get a chance to do a comparison yet?

Thanks,
brtaman

I wouldn't call it a theory yet. We have two observations at this point. If we get enough data, we may move on to a discussion. After that there will be consideration. If the consideration is positive we may go on to some testing. At that time we will postulate a working theory. If we fail to prove the null, THEN we may have a theory.

Re: Unexpected high power

;D ;D ;D

What an exact procedural definition of the scientific process! :) Perhaps hypothesis would have been a better choice on my part. Either way I am very interested in seeing how it will work out, perhaps it is time for a certain member *cough you *cough* to get himself a spectrometer. ;)
