Default Something to say about Etiquette

Hello everyone, I have already introduced myself, and this isn't that type of thread, but I thought the Welcome section would be the most appropriate place to put it, feel free to move it if there is a better place.

Now, I am on the forums quite a bit just reading through threads because pretty much every topic someone writes about, I enjoy looking at and offering advice if I can. However, through doing this, I have come across multitudes of posts talking about the vets of the forum saying how they are grumpy, anal, etc. And usually this is from fairly new members. I would like to discuss this briefly in this thread and feel free to leave your opinions as a reply, although keeping them objective and mature would be appreciated.

Now, when you go to someone's house that you have never met before, do you kick your shoes off as soon as you enter, hop down on their couch, and ask them to grab you some Chips or something? NO! Why not? Because there are a set of understood rules when entering another person's domain. You are expected to respect the rules of the house, respect the items therein, as well as be gracious to your host so as to not misuse the generosity they displayed when they allowed you in. A person's home/domain is their sanctuary from the world; a place of solitude where peace resides as an oasis in the desert.

The veterans of this forum have taken the time over the years to build this forum up and create a community and a place for fellow enthusiasts to flock to for camaraderie and help. This is their domain. When they allow you in, it is JUST like allowing a person into a home. Said person is expected to behave with the respect befitting said home. As such, it is perfectly natural for them to request that you abide by their rules, and they have even displayed them in the "Rules & Stickies" section so that no one will be caught unawares and disruptions of the peace of the forum will remain few and infrequent.

One of the things they request of the members of this forum to do is to abide by proper grammar usage as best as they can taking into account any language barriers that may exist or learning defficiencies. So when a veteran, or any member who considers this forum a nice place that should stay nice, critiques your use of grammar, it is not an affront to you nor is it rude, they are simply reminding you of the rules that have been agreed upon. The same goes for behavior. There is a standard of character which is expected of a member of this forum and when this standard is not met, or worse laughed at, the contributing members of this forum may correct the offending member. All the veterans are doing when they critique, correct, or caution is preserving the integrity of the forum and helping you avoid the consequences your disrespectful actions may bring on.

When a guest in a man's house spits in his face, the guest is thrown out. As such, do not be surprised if the spittle from your lips results in a boot to your backside().

Again, as I have said, the veterans here want you to succeed which is why they have a thread for Etiquette and a thread for the majority of beginner questions to help you on that path.

If you are new here, I hope you will introduce yourself in our Welcome section so we can get to know you and enjoy your stay!

This thread is not meant to cause anger for anyone but is merely meant to put things in perspective. Again, if you have any opinions you would like to state, you may post a reply or even pm me if you have some problem with me personally which you would like to express.

Have a great day
-Isaac

PS-I realize that I am fairly new to the forum myself but I feel like everyone should respect the forum and the veterans who made it what it was. I am not claiming to be better than anyone, this is just my 2 cents.

Excellent post! All I want to add (mostly this is directed at other vets) is that I don't feel that grammar should be overly stressed due to the fact that this is a global forum. For many people English is a 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) language.. I've always had trouble with that myself, since language barriers lead often to misunderstandings and frustration, which is why I'm posting this. If a person has bad grammar, try to look at where they are from before assuming they are just being too lazy to type properly.

Great Read. Please Use the Smilies!!!! Emotion and Meaning are very hard to express in a line of text. What You Meant to Say and what another member Read can be two very different things. Don't leave room for confusion.

Excellent write-up. +Rep

I will have to agree totally. Some new members have come into the forums expecting to plop on the couch and have someone hand-feed them chips and beer. That is not going to happen.
IMO, n00bs that don't respect veterans (despite if a rule was broken or not) should be promptly spanked.

Also to keep in mind some noobs to on forum may not be noobs to forums in general or even noobs to this type of forum, so a general respect should be given to all.

An experienced person on another forum is still a NooB here.

I would expect an experienced forum participant to understand that.

I do NOT expect PL or CPF to act or work like LPF.

It is NOT the forum's job to figure out how you work and adapt to you.

It is YOUR job to figure out how the forum works and adapt to it.

Different forums work differently.

Each has its own rules, norms, mores, traditions, and "rituals."

The OP shows an understanding of that.

It is the Noob's job to learn, NOT the veterans' job to teach

Peace,
dave

Sorry guys I couldn't resist.

You know some of the old guys can be grummpy or anal. But it is their prerogative, they have that right! Some of us noobs can be idiots.
As for me, I am stuck at home recovering from a broken ankle and some times the pain meds or booze (never both, I don't like meds so I drink a little)do a little talking and I do a lot of editing

I don't think I have ever asked for chips and beer and if I do please feel free to correct me!

I like LPF, it is very informative and at times very amusing.

Just my 2 cents!

Jeff

I agree with Dave, no 2 forums are the same, I belong to 3 others!

Could not have said it better myself-+rep to Wanna-and Dave is spot on once again.

At first I broke a few rules, did not follow the proper etiquette, etc--got scolded and schooled a time or two and learned from it.

The quality of info and amount of help blows me away.

The price asked for this is not much ... just be nice and do your own homework.

You would never wall into a public library and shout "Wheres the damn books on lasers, m-fkers?"

The LPF search is the card catalogue and T_J is the head librarian. Play nice and follow the rules....... or don't let the door hit you on the ass on your way out!!!

WELCOME ALL NEW MEMBERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ps $3 a month to the donations is a cheap price to pay IMHO

I would agree with Jerry, this would make a great sticky. Its nice to see newer members like waanaburn stuff, as its a reassurance for me, that not all new members are the same.

And I shouldn't treat them like they are all after the same thing... gotta work on that.
