Talking Greetings Laser Pointer Forums!

Dear Members of Laser pointer forums,
hello, my name is Jason, and I am a newbie here at LPF. A little history about myself and how I ended up hereI got a BFA in ceramics at Wayne State University in Detroit. After realizing I might need a skill to have as backup because being a successful studio artist is not an easy task, or becoming a production potter was not something I wanted to do for a living, I got another degree completing a 4 year skilled trade apprenticeship. I worked for about 10 years as a Union Millwright Journeyman. Most of this work was in auto plants around Detroit installing power and free conveyors, robots and other machinery and automation. I found myself having trouble finding work locally, so started traveling around the country and working in industrial factories ranging from power plants, water waist treatment plants, steel mills etc. This job paid well, but was hard on my body and I got tired of subjecting myself to toxic industrial environments working in permit required confined spaces and getting burnt up welding, cutting, and fabricating steel, as well as installing, maintaining and fixing machinery living out of hotels on the road constantly. I decided to further my education, and currently am in graduate school at SUNY New Platz in the Hudson Valley in the great state of New York! I am studying Fine Arts again and in the MFA program for ceramics.

I am starting my thesis research which focuses on how as humans, our bodies lack the ability to achieve the limitlessness and curiosity that our intellect and cognitive ability allows us. I make sculptures which parody this relationship we have with machines, apparatus, and technology we use as extensions of our bodies to help achieve the exploration of our environment, and gathering of information expanding our knowledge of the universe.

I have access to some technology at the university like 3D printer that uses thermal plastic extrusion, a C&C machine, full wood shop, 40 watt CO2 laser cutter, and all the ceramic kilns and equipment. I am learning to use CAD programs and design digital blueprints of objects.

I am fascinated with light, optics, lasers, fiber-optics, etc.. I like to use the skills I gained at my Millwrighting trade as well as formal art training and merge them into one. So obviously I must own some lasers and learn how they work and start building some of my own eventually.

I am already addicted to reading these forums and learning about lasers. I want to thank all of the people here-- veterans and newbies alike--for the knowledge compiled here. I hope to be able to share my experiences and knowledge with everyone and to become part of this great community. I know it is going to be a great time getting to know all of you learning about and building lasers, and implementing them into my work as an emerging artist.
Cheers,
Jalien

Ill to him is no ill, but only good in a mysterious form. Losses enrich him, sickness is his medicine, reproach is his honour, death is his gain. No evil in the strict sense of the word can happen to him, for everything is overruled for good. Happy is he who is in such a case. He is secure where others are in peril, he lives where others die.”—Spurgeon

Thanks for the tips guys Safety first is my motto, I have ordered and received my red laser safety goggles.Thank you to Jayrob for pointing me in the right direction where to purchase those. I have a decent variable current soldering iron, 62/36/2 rosin-core solder at .022" diameter, some heat shrinking, and a helping hands to hold on to those tiny parts for me. My first project I have for myself is to build a dummy load so I can test setting some current to drivers. My first kit I am assembling is from survival lasers, a LPC-826 in C6 host. Gary you have been amazing with customer service, thanks. I am so excited to fire up my first red laser. I have another LPC-826 diode I have to work with, and extracted an old red diode from a 16X dual layer dvd burner sled which I was told can handle about 250mA current at max. I will build something when I get a chance with those to practice my skills soldering. Next I have to buy some 405nm goggles for a Jayrob Stainless Steel 18650 kit which will use one of DTR's copper 405nm modules. I wanna give all of you guys a big thank you! I will be having a lot of fun with my start of a new hobby. [FONT="Times New Roman"] Maybe I will get myself a LPM for a Christmas gift to myself. Man this is addictive!
