Yep, Harbor Freight has lathes.  They have a super mini one that's under $300 and then bigger and bigger ones that go up in price.  Can't say much for the quality, though.  But, for the price?  May be worth it.  Just check out:

I literally live right down the street from one... and I know you're not too far from where I am, so it'd probably be easy for you to pick one up at a store, unless they have a closer one to you.

I haven't looked for one in the store, but the one near me is the only one in Toledo.  You could give them a call to ask if they carry it in store to make sure.  They also have a list of the stores on their website, you can look for a closer one to you on there.

And if I remember correctly, it only takes me about 45 min. to get up to the ferry for PIB, so you're definitely close.

Also, as Toked suggested, you could check for a used one too on craigslist, quite possibly may get a good deal on a nice one.

Grizzly Industrial has a nice metal lathe for $525, $70 shipping. It's a well known brand with a lot of other good quality equipment for sale. Invest in something you won't want to replace quickly.

That one from Harbor Freight is the same one I want to buy. It is being sold for $300 though, not $587 or whatever.
