I wonder if it's so hard to make adjustable power lasers?

Actually I am looking to buy 405nm's adjustable power laser, but I don't think I have seen any so far? but i thought it's possible to adjust the power on the driver? Or it's easier for the laser to die this way?

basicially the answer is you use a multi mode driver from a flashlight. DealExtreme has a lot of these. they have modes such as high/med/low/strobe etc

they are usually PWM moderated.

Thanks, but I don't mean high/low/strobe, but multi-steps adjustable,
but high/low/stroke is nice too

I have asked before, but they said it's not suitable for 405, as the multi mode form flash light is easier to burn the 405, the reason why it can be use on a 445 is because the diode is different.

It's possible. Easier in a lab-style host than a torch body though.

You could so it simply with a linear driver and variable resistor set up so as not to exceed the diodes rating- you would need lots of volts and heatsinking for this though.

The simplest way would be with a step up voltage driver and a gutsy variable resistor. Again with either bias resistors or some other method of preventing overdriving the diode.

What size laser are you looking for?
With somthing like this, the larger the laser the easier it is going to be to make.

I have built an adjustable 445 in a D maglite,
It had a twistable potentiometer sticking out over the power button.
I could adjust it anywhere from about 0.1W to a full 1W

Actually if possible, I would want pointer size, the D Mag lite seems a bit big... I have seen flash light uses 18650 battery with two button to adjust the brightness... But it's correct that 405 diode is much easier to burn compare to 445?

Got a link to that flashlight? it would probably be possible to make into a laser

Some times not always, for long range burning an sj06 405 will beat a 445,
But upclose, a good 445 will smoke a 405

EDIT:
it would be a good idea to post what you are willing to spend on it

I'm sure you could find the right sized variable resistor to fit in whatever you were after. It may take some creativity and even some metal machining to make everything fit but definitely possible

Thanks, Let me look for that flash light, I seen it a while ago, it's with two button near the neck of the light.

About budget, I really have no idea, maybe about 300-400? 405 is still around 500mw for a safe long life output, correct?

The reason I want is, is because I would like to keep it low power for fluorescent, but some seems to take a little more power... so I would like adjustable, and once a while I would burn something, and then I will turn it high up.
