So my dad's hobby is electronics and he fixes and repairs them for people. He needs something to heat up parts on a circuit board to test them to see if they fail.

Anyway, he thought about a laser and knows I have a couple.

So I'm looking for a laser that will heat up these little circuit board parts. He was thinking of heating them to 100 degrees or so. I'm assuming a cheap red burning laser would do, but I'm not sure what the best power would be. Plus I want to be safe, so I'm assuming I'd want to buy him glasses as well.

Anyone have a cheap burning laser and glasses for sale?
 





A laser would not be the best option for that... try holding it over a soldering iron or something. Good luck

I am not sure how well a laser would work for this.

use a heat gun. i use one at about 400-500 degrees F for my re-flow and soldering work and it should heat them sufficiently without damaging them with some practice. A laser would be impractical because it would reflect off the parts and not transmit its power very well. and you'd need quite a lot of power to attempt it.
 
A 500mW 405nm laser would work but, a soldering iron would be cheaper, easier, and safer. You could grab a small infrared thermometer to monitor the temperature of components as well. Also, I'm sure you want to heat the components up to a lot more than 100F, that's just barely warmer than your body temp, if not then I suggest sticking your finder on the component :P

Contact based heaters doesn't ensure even heating very well and you could very well burn out the mods first.
Try a 1W+ 405nm , near UV is rarely reflected by silicon based mods... I think.

But then you won't be able to use a Ir thermo due to the interference, I'll reckon.
Never tried it myself tho.
