.. Use the focusing lens that comes with the diodes on the drives that we extract them from, expecially the Blu-ray drives. Maybe these lenses are AR coated, possibly even glass? Just wondering if anyone has tried them yet, as Blu-ray's dont have a great selection for lenses...

Oh - they WORK...that isn't the problem....the problem is, the focal length is so infinitesimally small that for all accounts and purposes, they are worthless for anything other than DVD burning :(

most of those are plastic moulded lenses. The 6x writer focusing lens is actually made of glass, AR coated and probably aspheric. One of the surfaces is almost 1/2 a sphere, which results in an impracticably small focal length /but also low aberrations for diffraction-limited focusing/.

the other optics are kinda neat. the burner i just took apart for an open can diode contained a tiny beam splitter cube, a bunch of glass mittors and windows, and a few filters..
