why don't any companies make "good" red lasers?

How come very few companies sell "good" red lasers?

The only companies that sell high-powered portable lasers at the moment are Wicked Lasers and Laserglow, and many people would prefer not to buy from Wicked. LaserGlow sells a high-powered red laser, but it only goes up to 200 mW. From what I've hard, some diodes from DVD burners peak at around 400 mW.

Also, most high-powered red lasers have a pretty large beam diameter (like 4 mm), which is undesirable. Yet, Stephanie from LC has made a burner with a beam diameter of 3 mm, and it seems to have good divergence, and I think Pseudonomen137 said that a red laser could go down to 2 mm and still have good specs.

So I'm wondering, why don't other companies like NOVA and Optotronics start producing red lasers?

Well the reason is because at that power it would have to be multi-mode with horrible beam specs because of it. Dvd burners can go that high but its not good for it, they could put a 400mw laser but it would not last but a week probably. Just like gazoo had a diode that was putting out 350mw or so and it died with only about an hour runtime. You could get a high powered red if it was dpss, but they are really expensive. Green lasers can go high because they are dpss to, a multimode ir diode (which would have bad beam specs if it was just colaminated with a lense and not gone thur crystals) is used in them and since it is shined thru various crystals it basicly forms it into a single beam so it can have better beam specs and doesnt look like a square like multimode reds often do.

You can buy high powered and good red lasers. Just crack open your wallet and buy a 671nm DPSS laser system. Other than that you just have to deal with the limitations of laser diode output.

The reason NOVA and Optotronics don't start producing red lasers is that they don't produce anything. They are distributors for the manufacturers.
