I don't know. I'm not so sure how "rare" these "windowless" diodes are. 160mW seems very low, especially if it's an open-can, should be more like 500mW or 1W.

It's just a diode taken from a DVD burner or a CD burner, there's nothing rare about them. ;D It's not 160mW, probably 100mW at most.

Probably just a ripoff??? (I don't know)

I don't think so, since the diode is a 9mm one instead of a 5.6mm it has to be a lot more powerful, I remember seeing some 9mm 500mW red LDs a long time ago for around 400 bucks IIRC. (I don't exactly remember)

You may be right, he did say he had a "freak" IR diode which was putting out around 160mW.

Actually the last name on the package I got for DDL Plug n' Play boards was something like "Khazaieli", and because that isn't a common name around here, I'm guessing that is amk. I could be wrong because that very well could be a common name somewhere else, so sorry amk if this is somebody else! I'm not trying to stereotype or anything! ;D

Do you know if he got it from a CD burner? If so, then that is not an 808nm diode!

You should try sending him a pm, because I just don't feel like doing it right now. :p

You're right, I should send him a PM, but I'm too lazy to send any PMs right now :D

The diode was from me, it's 48-52x cdrw 784nM inside the LG 18x DVD Burner. :p
Not sure if all of them can put out that much power. :p

In average, they put out around 80 - 100mW, or so I've heard. Amk said he had a freak diode which he was driving at I think was 200 or 250mA, and it was putting out around 160, or I think it was 180mW, I can't remember. :-?

Why is this so expensive? http://cgi.ebay.com/INDUSTRIAL-BARE...VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247

NEVER TALK ABOUT MY **** WITHOUT MY PERMISSION!!! (quote courtesy of tourettes guy)

yea, they are rare because they only come out of 20x drives, and not many people harvest 20x drives for a living.

160mW is not low, especially for a DVD burner. Mine was one of the few freaks that didnt die at 250mA.

its funny what people say behind your back.

I wouldn't worry about the technicalities, there were a few people on ebay selling Red laser diodes, and had DPSS written all over the auction. it is more of a meta term than a description (shows up in searches).

There was a guy reselling DX 1mW reds (the 5 pack for $4 ones) and he also had "great for DPSS and laser light shows" in the description.

not to say I am trying to scam people. and to put y'all at rest, I put 780nm in big bold letters on the auction page.

Chido it IS 160mW. I DO NOT APPRECIATE IT WHEN PEOPLE TALK BEHIND MY BACK INSINUATING THAT I AM SCAMMING. I WOULD NEVER OVER SPEC MY LASERS, ESPECIALLY BY 60mW!!!

also, how is this a stereotype?

sorry for double post,

amk
