I bought a few random modules from DTRs laser shop and I am generally unhappy with the beam “quality”. Every one has artifacts and I want something clean. Where can I buy clean modiules ?
Thanks
lol
1) The beam quality doesn't depend on anything that DTR does, Depends on the diode
2) the artifacts you're seeing are dust particles on the lens lol clean your lenses.

Hi, I was going to say the same, the modules doesn't have anything to do with beam quality. The module is only a devise to hold the diode and dissipate the wasted heat. All diodes purchased are luck of the draw some better than others. The lens can be a big drawback in some cases. There is nothing wrong with the modules DTR sells as a matter of fact they are the best around and what we have to offer. MM diode are funny compared to SM diodes for sure.

Ok, so I guess I should rephrase and say what are some good diodes ?
(*The artifacts are not dirty lens)
Is one type of lens better for a clean beam ?
3 element lenses are best for keeping a tight beam, Most likely you are using acrylic lenses, with those big circular artifacts are common.
Nice diodes are the PL 520 50mw
Sharp 488
Sharp 455
Sharp 638 185IIRC mw
And sharp 505

I say module because I’m too dumb and lazy to build my own.

Hi, I wouldn't use the word dumb you have the smarts really. It just takes a little time to figure things out when your new to something .
We all Had our moments of glory and failure. I myself included. And im still learning. This is a single mode 520 still up for sale can barter on the price, negotiable ..

Ok, thanks. I have some G8s on my modules now, I’ll try 3 element.
funny you say that about the Sharp 488 55mw because mine with the G8 is pretty bad. Like my 7845 or whatever. It’s my new favorite color but it’s very bad unless focused to a fine point.
The bdr209 w/G2 isn’t too bad.
Hi, The 488nm diode can use an acrylic lens if powered low and that will cut the box reflexion.

Lol, lower your damn expectations! don't expect TEM00 circular profiles out of anything but bluray and DVD diodes and Fabry parrot diodes,
Single-mode diodes (like the 488 sharp although it does have a big box reflection which is typical due to them being sharp diodes, Nichia and Osram 488s don't have such box reflections to that extent but are way pricier) have an oval-shaped beam, Multimode ones typically big fast divergent rectangles. For good beams go with a gas or DPSS laser.

If you bought modules complete with driver and lens from DTR, he does not sell acrylic lenses at all so that has nothing to do with anything you are experiencing --he only sells/supplies no lens or a glass lens of your choosing : https://sites.google.com/site/dtrslasershop/home/glass-lenses

Low cost laser diodes in hobby laser pointer use are mass produced other purposes which is why they are low cost affordable and all harvested from or replacements for devices they were designed and made for--projectors, DVD players and so on -- generally.

A good graphic representation and explanation of inherently oblong/rectangular beam from a laser diode facet as well a a little bit about correcting with lenses is here: https://blog.rpmclasers.com/laser-diode-fundamentals-beam-properties
See also good overview of diode lasers here: https://go.rpmclasers.com/lasers-10...15.877226873.1548701010-1577921216.1543345299

If you want or need good beam quality/Gaussian beam quality you need to buy a DPSS laser like a DPSS 532nm from Jetlasers one of the few who even offer DPSS hand held lasers or look into good quality lab laser from CNI.
Beam qualilty: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_beam_quality

You can buy low cost mass produced up to 200mW DPSS modukes for use in pointers on eBay with better beam quality than any diode as well.

See: https://www.jetlasers.org/index.php?id_product=72&controller=product
and see wide array of DPSS wavelengths and good quality lab lasers at CNI http://www.cnilaser.com/products.htm
Laserglow in Canada sells CNI laser as does Ultralasers https://www.laserglow.com/index.html and
https://www.ultralasers.com/about-us.php?section=ABOUT US if you want to see cost involved

I like the different shape spots, I just don’t like the weird stuff that shows up around it.
You can see here on my dirty subfloor what I am talking about...this is the super hot Sharp 488.
This (some type of exotic bird head?) is extremely annoying, it makes no pattern or sense...

The second one i can almost deal with because it’s almost symmetrical...it almost looks like it belongs there.

anyways, thanks for the replies and infos. I like to play with the focus and make big and small and round and square shapes, I just wanted to do it without weird artifacts. If I show this to my friends the first thing they will say is “what is that stuff” and I’ll be so embarrassed. 😆jk

I guess I will just keep buying the stuff until I get some special/very nice ones. (Got that stimulus check)
Yea those are typical.. Try the DTR-3E-B lens, Would eliminate those as much as possible.

Hi, Here is a 532nm DPSS I put in a 501B host ,

do you have something short, fat, and plum crazy purple for my 405nm ?
(would be cool to have one with a 6v lantern battery...)
Hi,
If you want I can do a Purple 501B host with a violet poweder coated heat sink.

Hi,
These hosts are short enough , question would it be for a 20mm DTR module or a 12mm DTR module. I would need to bore out the sink to fit the 20mm module for the sink. That would be 75.00 + 8.30 S/H = 83.30 Priority mail 2/3 day delivery ..
Im Almost done with your 532 build should be ready to ship by tomorrow . If you want the 501b /20mm violet build let me know and I can ship them together to save on shipping.

Hi,
If you have a 20mm module already with a BDR209 I can do a 501B purple with a sink like this. The 501b with a 12mm module sink is 6-1/2 inches long and 1IN at the wides point.
With the 20mm module the sink would be like this on a 501B host. The pic shows the sink in a side button host.
Or I have these also for a 12mm module

Hi,
No those are very small hosts 1X14500. 12mm only
