What's better? Blu-Ray or Red?

I'm in the market for some parts to build a burning laser, and originally was going to get a 16x DVD Burner diode. I could get one rather cheap, etc.

But I recently thought of making a Blu-Ray laser instead, (burning of course). What diode would be good? I considered eBay, and found a few, such as:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/150mW-405nm-...ryZ42884QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Same one but comes with it's own module: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/150mW-405nm-...ryZ42884QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Or an "Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive" replacement diode "PHR 803T":

Or would it be easier just getting a HD DVD Xbox 360 Drive and taking it apart?

Which one of those would emit the best power? I want something with maximum power, etc. If you can recommend something even better than the above links, I'd be happy to check them out - price is of no real concern.

Also, what other parts would be essential to have in a Blu Ray laser? Or they the same as red, ie: the DDL Driver, etc.

Please get back to me.

Also, Jay, your custom machined heatsinks, would they fit those diodes? And would I be able to make, say an MXDL Laser with pretty much those parts, but use a Blu-Ray diode instead of the red?

What diode would be better? Ie: bang for my buck, etc.

Cheers

The parts for a red and a blu ray are pretty much the same, although the driver and batteries would need to be taken into consideration for voltage and current. Blu Rays are run at a much lower current than 16x reds. The flexdrive is a good driver to use for either, as it is flexible (hence the name.) A 100mA driver by rckstr is also a good option for a blu ray, as it is a conservative power which will keep longevity of the diode.

If you buy the diode by itself, you will need to install it into an aixiz module. From what I understand, this is where alot of diodes get broken. You can order ones preinstalled in a module by browsing around the forum.

Jay's heatsinks fit aixiz modules, no matter what diode is in the module.

Sure, sure... brunette all the way. I mean, if you can't handle the redheads, then you gotta take what you can get, right?

hahaha i think i would pick the brunette as well.

but depending on what host you will be using you may want to go with the flex drive rather than the rckstr one.

the rckstr needs at least 7 volts to run a blu ray and the flew you can easily run a blu ray with 2.5 volts

if you go with the rckstr you will then need some stronger 3.6 volt batteries like the 10440 (same size as the aaa but 3.6 volts each)

if you go witht he flex you may end up saving money by paying 11 dollars more but not having to buy the 10440 batteries and charger for them.

I think I'll take the Brunette too... ;D

If you are just looking to burn things with the laser, you will be better off using an open can red laser diode.

Here is the cheapest source of an open can: http://daedallasers.com/lasers/laser-sleds/lg-dvd-burner-sled.html
You can get powers up to 300mW with a Merideth lens or 250mW with an Aixiz lens.

If other things interest you other than burning then you should use the PHR-803T sled.

Edit: Oops,, forgot to add link... :p
