I'm trying to make a DVD burner laser just for fun but can't think of switches to use.

Would these work?
1.http://dx.com/p/car-toggle-button-switch-dc-12v-130354
2.http://dx.com/p/diy-blue-led-illumi...85?rt=1&p=2&m=2&r=3&k=1&t=1&s=146171&u=146185

I'm also wondering what battery I should use for a 24x DVD burner.

Please tell me what the switch or battery is called. (Links for the item is preferred)

^ Yep. Switches are the least of your worries, you're going to need a driver, module, lens and a heatsink before you can even think of powering it up.

you cant switch that on and off fast enough to regulate a safe current.

You still don't answer my question. I will be putting in a metal can and use modules from online and swap the diode.

No problem with the shown switches. The red laser use a few hundered mA current and that isn't enough to stress the switches.

The switches are fine. As for a power source the battery is dependant on what driver you want to use. You don't hook a laser diode directly up to a battery unless your goal is to see how quick you can blow your diode. You will have to use a driver circuit to regulate the power supply to the diode.

A good source for diode drivers is this website:
