Wanting to build a laser engraver

Hi everyone!

So I'm thinking about making my own laser engraver to etch wood, leather, etc. I imagine at least a few people on the forum have built one at some point and I was hoping to get ideas and tips before I start. I am planning to use a 3.5 to 5 W diode, and yes I wear my safety glasses.

So do you want it to be automated? Like a computer set up. Or manual like hold the laser yourself. Most 1watt handheld lasers can but if you want a setup like a drill press I don't know since I've not gotten past ebay lasers.
