Hi I am new to lasers and I want some ideas on what I should be looking for.
How powerful a laser will I need if I want to point it at black birds flying through my back yard and be able to light them as they fly?

Thanks

not sure if serious post or not.. but anyway...

you won't be able to hit a moving target enough for it to light up, and stationary bird will fly away if it senses weird

if you have a spare odd billion dollars in the bank you might be able to get one of these

Waving high power lasers around in the air is a very BAD idea on multiple levels.

Why is it not a good idea to point a laser into the sky.
I just thought it would be fun to hit birds with it.

Because it's dangerous and irresponsible. What if one of your neighbors, or anyone else nearby happens to be looking out a window or walking by as your waving a laser around and they catch a beam in the eye? Illuminating aircraft, even accidentally, will also result in the same punishments as doing it intentionally.

If you think the safety aspect is 'overblow', then just read this thread.

Lasers.. no matter how cool they may be, are NOT toys.
