Holy crap... I had about an hour or two of trouble shooting on this laser, but I finally got it lit, and it's the most beautiful I've ever seen. 442nm is amazing....

The pictures dont do the color justice...

Yeah it wasn't such a nice score at first. I could get one side to fire but the other side just wouldn't sustain. I thought something was hosed, but by now I am used to laser "let down' so it didn't really bother me too much. About two hours later I decided to have another go at it with my hand held tesla coil (like I had done many times before, but before I was zapping it at the electrode and I noticed the 'charge' kept igniting into the helium, not down the bore of the laser) but THIS TIME I hit the bore of the laser, even though it's covered in cloth, and it stayed lit!! I was SOOOO happy when it lit up! BUT these take about 5-10 minutes before they even lase, so there were some tense moments there. The discharged looked golden, which is exactly how it should look, but there was always the possibility of the mirrors being WAY out of alignment. Well after about 4 minutes I saw a tiny blue 'wink' at the brewster stem, but it went away as fast as it appeared. Then about another minute or two later, the blue was sustaining! And it got brighter and brighter and brighter.

The power on this is "100mW MAX", but my guess is that it's doing about 20mW right now. I'm not sure what the 'nominal' output power should be, but I know when they haven't been ran in a while it takes a lot of running to get them back up to full power. I'm hoping for around 40mW.... we'll see.

This laser just operating, not even necessarily the beam and spot and all that, but just the internal workings are a piece of art. I really want to mount this on my wall to enjoy it (that and the laser is about 4 FEET LONG and I dont have anywhere else to put it....) ;D ;D

That's a pretty cool idea. You could always still "play" with the light with a couple of well placed mirrors.

so does this unit only put out 442nm? I remember first reading about HeCd and some were single line and other had other deep UV wavelengths.

None the less its a thing of beauty, and if you looking for a place to put it i have plenty of space ::)

You know that I am VERY jealous, right?

You will get a PSU and soon see the HeCd in it's full glory!!! What model is your head anyway?

Oh, as a side note, I got your lasos head today but Haven't had a chance to tinker... I had to play with my new laser first hehehe

I currently have no working gas lasers :( My HeNe died after leaving it running on a table for 3 months straight. It made such a nice nightlight and I couldn't resist.
