Torch Reflectors for Collecting Light?

Ok, I know that torch reflectors are used for emitting light from a light source in a certain field of angle as that's the main purpose of it.

My question is though, can I use them for the reverse operation? That is, can I use it to collect light into a photo-diode (which I would have obviously mounted at the focal point) ? Does that include those products who claim that they are "emitters"? (Eg. Smooth Aluminum Reflector Suitable for CREE C8 Emitter? Silver | eBay)

For me, I want it to able to collect a red laser beam (For data communication purposes) so that I don't have to use incredibly precise pointing to establish the communication.

Yes, that will work fine. That's why satellite dishes work. You might find a lens is more efficient though.
